Tales of Adventure from the Beauty Spotlight Team! Exotic Oils, Epic Loot and Incredible Eyeshadows!

Greetings from the feasting table in the tavern, fellow rogues!

How’s your weekend going? I don’t know about you, but the deadlines are coming thick and fast over here at Rogue HQ. What sort of deadlines does a rogue have, you may ask? Well, let’s just say the ‘dead’ part has a ‘special’ meaning…

(Not really. I just have a backlog of papers to get through 😛 Although, if I don’t meet the deadlines, my supervisor may ensure that the ‘dead’ part does come true…hmmm…)

ANYWAY.

Since I’ll just start whinging about journal publisher politics if you give me half a chance, let’s relax with some delicious scones and weekend beauty reading (scones optional)! 😀 What does a group of adventurers do after a long fortnight of successful questing? Why, they gather in the tavern to feast and tell tales of their adventures of course! Grab a tankard of mead, friends, and settle in!

Who Do I Want on My Adventuring Team? <3 Blogs I Love, Part 1! <3

Greetings from the heart of a band of true and noble adventurers, fellow rogues!

As you know, the most important part of an adventurous quest is not the loot, all the glittering treasures you clasp to your jerkin as you outrun a dragon’s searing annoyance. It’s not the glory, the foaming tankards of ale that you  throw over your shoulder as you try to master quaffing. It’s not even the frisson of danger, the tingle that keeps you sharp in the face of hidden blade traps and disgruntled drow…  😉

Nope, it’s the band of true and noble adventurers you have at your side: the rogue who disarms the traps and pops up out of nowhere to backstab the orc trying to behead you. The berserker who rampages past, shedding goblin heads like autumn foliage as she cuts through the crowd that threatened to overwhelm you. The cleric who purges the undead from the battlefield in a burst of searing radiance just as that zombie was about to bite your face off. You get the idea – without our friends,  our fellow treasure seekers, we’re faceless, headless, and covered in goblins (no, I didn’t know how to round that off either). 😀

DnD adventuring party

Every adventure is better with stalwart allies. And a birdman, obviously.

On that slightly overwrought note, let me introduce you to a few bloggers that I absolutely adore. As you can see above, this is a ‘Part 1’,  so there are more amazing adventurers to come! I made a little list, and threw the names into a hat, and these were the first 3 that came out. This is also a valid method for putting together your quest party, but of course it helps when you only have the finest quality adventurers in the hat anyway! There’ll be some familiar faces here, but if I manage to introduce even one reader to the magic of these bloggers, that’s treasure enough for me :-).

Click on the photo to visit the corresponding blog!

(P.S. Being a rogue, I shamelessly stole the forthcoming pictures from the blogs in question, but of course they are the property of the respective bloggers! (The one above is mine))

The Sorceress Jaa (Hello Jaa)

The stunning Jaa! Look at those eyeshadow skills. LOOK AT THEM.

Jaa is many different kinds of awesome. She’s a scientist, a beauty blogger, a stellar photographer, and a might-as-well-be-professional webdesigner. Her blog is even bilingual. Because she is so epically, disgustingly multitalented, I have hired her into the party as our sorceress! I figure that whether we need her to summon, fireball or scry, she’ll have us covered! ^_^ The reason you should go immediately and visit her blog, however, is that she’s also a super lovely person. ❤

The (Rock)Bard Rae (the Notice)

OMGCHEEKBONES. Want them. NAO.

Bards are tricky. Some people consider them even to be a specialised flavour of rogue, using music and sass to distract, debuff *and* buff. In Rae’s case: you see that sweet, pretty face with the killer bone structure? That face belies a razor sharp wit, epic makeup skills and rad writing (and possibly untold skill with a lute. I’ve never asked). She entertains, she amazes, and she takes a mean photo. Like our sorceress, she’s also a spiffing person, just to top it all off. ❤

The Battlemage Melissa (Kiss & Make-Up)

Bad. Ass. Ain’t no Mindflayer getting past here…

There’s just no messing with Melissa. She’s another bilingual blogger. Her eyeshadow looks put mine to shame. She casts a mean fireball, and even agreed to do some epic geeky collaborations when a strange rogue emailed her about them. This is the kind of magic person you want on your adventuring team – a charming, geeky mage who can kick serious butt, looking utterly fabulous all the while. ❤

So! Those are the first three adventurers out of my Hat of Awesome. I hope you enjoy (or are already enjoying!) their blogs as much as I do! 😀 Stay tuned for more in upcoming editions of this post…

Until next time, fellow adventurers, don’t forget to check for traps!

The Beauty Spotlight Team: Advanced Stealth for Multitasking Rogues with 15 Minute Beauty!

Beauty Spotlight Team 15 Minute Beauty favorite-concealers

Greetings from deepest stealth, fellow rogues!

We all need a little bonus to our stealth rolls from time to time – this goes double if you’re a typical rogue, trying to do all the things at once – scout ahead, disarm that scythe blade trap, backstab that skeletal necromancer, etc. Today is your lucky day, however – we have all the pro concealer tips from a true connoisseur!

Christine from 15 Minute Beauty is a busy lady.  She works full time, has a blog and a family.  She gets phone calls all night long for work, not to mention restless nights of sleep because of pregnancy issues!  It should come as no surprise that she has more concealer than a Sephora store.

Night of 1001 Rogues: The Sleek Arabian Nights Smoke and Shadows Eyeshadow Palette!

Greetings from the glittering desert night, fellow rogues!

So, I’m a huge fan of many things ‘Arabian’ – I love the history of the Middle East (to the point of having an entire university degree in Egyptology/Near Eastern history), I think Arabic calligraphy and Islamic art and architecture are just about some of the spiffiest you’ll find anywhere, it’s not possible for me to get enough of Middle Eastern food, and I have been lucky enough to travel not un-extensively in that part of the world! Their maths and science even helped haul Europe out of the Dark Ages (much as you might feel otherwise about this as you learn algebra?) ;-).

When I saw, therefore, that Sleek had released a limited edition eyeshadow palette entitled ‘Arabian Nights Smoke and Shadows’…well! Sleek has some of the best international shipping rates I’ve ever seen (~$4 from the UK to NZ?!?!), I’ve heard so many good things about their eyeshadows, and DID I MENTION IT’S THE ARABIAN NIGHTS PALETTE? *cough* sorry. Sometimes this rogue gets a little carried away over certain treasures…I mean, I can, in fact, recite the script of Disney’s Aladdin verbatim (including all the songs).

Sleek Arabian NIghts Eyeshadow Palette Review and Swatches

What’s this palette artefact all about then? Well, it’s a limited edition offering based on the tales of the 1001 Nights, a collection of arabic myths, legends, and folk tales that has been around since about the 9th Century. The basic premise is that there’s a bitter and hypermisogynistic Sultan who takes as his latest  wife one Scheherazade, the daughter of his vizier. Since he’s been killing off all his previous wives after their wedding night (so that he’d get their virginity but they could never be unfaithful to him – yes, just as messed up as it sounds), Scheherazade devises the plan of telling him a thrilling story before bed, but leaving it on a cliffhanger! Her unfolding and interconnected stories manage to get her through 1001 nights, by which time the Sultan has gotten over his issues and decides not to murder her. Don’t you just love romantic, happy endings? ^_^

Packaging: sturdy and…sleek!
Ba-DUM-tish!! (I’ll be here ’til Thursday! Try the moutabbel!)

Some stories you may associate with with the 1001 Nights, such as Aladdin and Sinbad, are not actually part of the original set, but are other, standalone Middle Eastern folk tales that were added to the anthology by – believe it or not – a Frenchman named Galland in the 18th Century. As I go through the colours below, I thought I’d try and take a stab at associating each shade with its 1001 Nights story. Ready to dive into the vally of diamonds, fellow adventurers? (Who wouldn’t be, based on that name?).

Sleek Arabian NIghts Eyeshadow Palette Review and Swatches

Using the light available to me and my limited camera skillz, there was no way to avoid the glare on that plastic sheet…

Let’s dive straight in, shall we? The palette comes in a sleek (oh Gods…) black case with a truly ferocious clasp – you need have no fear of this popping open in your bag (it’s the perfect travel size and weight), but if you have just manicured your nails, you may with to reach for another instrument from your kitbag to jimmy this thing open. Rogues with trap disarming tools will probably have something, so if you’re rocking another class, ask a nearby thief ;-). Inside is a plastic sheet with the names, a generous mirror, twelve gloriousy coloured eyeshadows and a token double ended sponge crapplicator (I love you, Rae!).

In terms of specifics:

Sleek Arabian NIghts Eyeshadow Palette Review and Swatches

Scheherazade’s Tale, Gold Souk and Aladdin’s Lamp. The last one is more taupey in real life, but…cameras and fluorescently pale skin and daylight, you know? 😛

Scheherazade’s Tale is a shimmering, light peachy pinkish ‘base sheen’ or ‘edge blending’ or ‘browbone’ type of colour. This type of thing, like my usual favourite UD Sin makes a great, easy ‘toss it on the lid, add mascara/liner and go’ shade. It’s is super smooth and buttery, with solid pigmentation. The name makes it pretty obvious what this shade is about! 😉

Gold Souk is a sheer, glittery gold. Although I didn’t have any fallout problems with this, and I love how the glitteriness ties into the name without being OMG GLITTER WTF, if you’re looking for a gold eyeshadow with the pigmentation of, say UD Half-Baked, this is not it. This is more of a ‘sheer wash of sparkle’ kind of shade – useful in its own way, and really pretty. The name I couldn’t specifically find in the 1001 Nights – obviously, gold crops up a fair bit, and there are many famous gold souks in the Middle East (both modern and ancient), but I think this is more ‘flavour text’ than a specific reference. If you know otherwise, though, let me know!

Aladdin’s Lamp is a smooth, shimmering, cool taupe brown shade. It’s buttery and pigmented, and the kind of shde that is pretty much essential to an everyday eyeshadow wardrobe (well, if you’re wearing neutrals every day). It’s great in the crease, it’s great on the lash line, it’s great all over the lid! If you have more than one eyeshadow, you probably have something in the same colour family, but it’s a fantastic shade. The name is probably familiar to most of you, but what you may not know is that (as I mentioned above) Aladdin is not part of the original 1001 Nights! It was added to the collection of tales by 18th C anthologist and translator Antoine Galland. This doesn’t make it any less awesome, however.

Sultan’s Garden (left) and Hocus Pocus (right). You see what I mean about Sultan’s Garden kind of being a less impressive version of Hocus Pocus? Weird…

Sultan’s Garden is a difficult shade, and probably the worst in the palette. I’m sorry to be blunt, but it always makes me sad when there’s a fabulous palette with lovely texture and pigmentation generally, and then there’s this shade with an awesome colour and cool duchrome effect, and it had a stiff texture and ‘meh’ pigmentation. Having said that, this smoky forest green with gold/turquoise duochrome microsparkle is still worth using – you just need to use it on the lash lines, for smoking out the edges of things, or maybe for wetting and making into liner (I haven’t tried this yet). The sparkle in it really is glorious, but I wish they’d made it fully pigmented! As for the name, I’m wondering if this might refer to the Story of the Speaking Bird! Other than that, there are quite a few sultans in the tales, so…

Hocus Pocus is an AMAZING, smooth, forest green with turquoise shimmer. Really, this is kind of what I wanted Sultan’s Garden to be a smoky version of. It’s a jewel-tone shade that really works with the theme of the palette (IMO) and blends gorgeously with so many of the other colours. The name is a bit random – Hocus Pocus, in terms of referring to magic/sorcery, is definitely inkeeping with the Arabian Nights idea, but the words themselves are a corruption of ‘Hoc est corpus meum’, Latin for ‘this is my body’, the phrase spoken during the holiest part of the Catholic Mass, the consecration. As the phrase moved into alchemy and magic, it became ‘Hocus Pocus’. Not terribly Arabian, but have an interesting factoid anyway! 😀

Simbad’s Seas. I just. There are no words. *drools*

Simbad’s Seas OK, so, what you all need to do, right now, is go and buy this palette for this shade alone. Alright, maybe I’m exaggerating, but you’ll know what I mean when you look at the swatch. Something that many makeup companies seem to have trouble doing is produce a saturated, vivid, sapphire blue eyeshadow that isn’t somehow sheer, or chalky, or not actually blue when you swatch it. Sleek has created a masterpiece here, and I would pay the $12 that this palette costs for this shadow alone. Since you also get a whole bunch of other magically awesome shadows with it…well! It’s a dense, buttery, pigmented sapphire blue shimmer – almost a metallic, as the sheen is the same colour. This here is what blue eyeshadow dreams are made of, people. The name refers to the stories of the Adventures of Sinbad (or Simbad, I guess), a sailor who had a lot of very interesting and unusual experiences. As I mentioned above, it’s not technically part of the original 1001 Nights, having been put at the same time as Aladdin. The stories are cool, nevertheless!

Sleek Arabian NIghts Eyeshadow Palette Review and Swatches

Genie, Black Magic and Stallion. How cool of a colour is Stallion?

Genie is a coolish dark brown shimmer with a rusty red untertone and a pink sheen to the sparkle.  Does that even make sense? Whatever it is, it’s very dense and smooth, and the contrast of lighter warm undertone with darker cool top tone produces a nice multidimensional effect. The name is the French transliteration of the arabic ‘jinni’ or ‘djinni’. There are at least two tales in the original 1001 Nights that contain one – The Fisherman and the Jinni and the Trader and the Jinni. Of course, Aladdin has one too ;-).

Black Magic is one of those ‘oil slick’ kind of shades. Maybe ‘gunmetal’ might be appropriate too. Basically, it’s a smoky, very dark grey with a generous helping of petrol blue shimmer to it. The shadow is soft and smooth, and although the pigmentation of the underlying grey is not as heavy or even as some other shades, the quantity of the blue shimmer is very generous, and creates a neat two-tone effect. The name is another relatively non-specific one, as ‘black magic’ occurs several times in various tales, but is not usually referred to as such.

Stallion is a smoky, dark plum/burgundy shade. The shadow itself is soft and smooth, although like Black Magic the pigmentation is a bit patchier/lighter than would be ideal. Unlike many of the other shades in the palette, this one is a satin matte, with no shimmer or sparkle whatsoever! The name probably refers to the tale of the Ebony Horse.

Sleek Arabian NIghts Eyeshadow Palette Review and Swatches

Sorcerer, Valley of Diamonds and 1001 Nights. Ugh, Just look at Valley of Diamonds. Seriously….

Sorcerer is (to me) a bit like Black Magic with less blue shimmer. It’s a hazy, dark grey shadow with (if you look in the pan) multicoloured sparkle to it. On the skin, the pigmentation is on the lighter, smokier side, and the multicolour shimmer, while still present, is so fine that it takes on more of a multidimensional sheen. I think this one would be cool wetted down as a liner, actually (although I haven’t tried it yet!). The name is…yet another kind of general one, as sorcerers are not at all underrepresented in the 1001 Nights! Seriously, though. Does anyone from the West hear the words ‘Arabian’ and ‘sorcerer’ together and not get an immediate mental image of Jafar from Disney’s Aladdin? Just me? OK… 😉

Valley of Diamonds is kind of awesome, to be honest. It’s a smooth, vivid, pigmented magenta/plum eyeshadow with chunky gold flake glitter. I mean, really, people. You need this in your life! The name refers to the tale of Sinbad’s Second Voyage, actually, so it’s kind of nested within ‘Simbad’s Seas’.

1001 Nights is a *super* pigmented, smooth black eyeshadow with very fine shimmer that’s similar to the stuff in  Black Magic and Sorcerer, in the sense that it’s both blue-themed and very, very fine. For all intents and purposes, this is a satin eyeshadow, although if you look in the pan (in person) you can see more individually the sparkles. A fine and rogueworthy black shadow that rounds out the palette nicely! The name is, once again, kind of self-evident ;-).

Phew! If anyone’s still around after that long desert campfire tale (and hasn’t run out of rations or snuck off to do battle against a few more disgruntled djinni), congratulations! 😀 In summary, I think this palette is more than worth its affordable price point, cost-effective shipping and cool theme. As I said (and as a blue eyeshadow lover) I’d get the thing for Simbad’s Seas alone, but you also get the awesomeness of Hocus Pocus, Valley of Diamonds, Aladdin’s Lamp, Genie, 1001 Nights and Scheherazade’s Tale. The misses/redundancies are probably Sultan’s Garden, and the Black Magic/Stallion/Sorcerer area of the palette, but only because their pigmentation is less impressive than that of the others. They’re still nice colours and useful ‘smokies’ in their own right, although they didn’t quite live up to their full potential.  Should you go for this (LE) palette? If you’re not already drowning in palettes, definitely. If you’re a blue eyeshadow connoisseur, definitely! If you love autumnal, jewel-toned eyeshadows in (mostly) excellent quality at an unbeatable price point, definitely!

I’m definitely planning to do a few looks with this palette (especially Simbad’s Seas!), but the daylight’s been a bit rubbish around here lately, so I haven’t been able to get much in the way of good photos. Stay tuned! If anyone has any requests for looks with this palette (or just in general) let me know it the comments 🙂

Answer Me These Questions Three! – A Suitably Geeky Makeup Poll #3

Greetings from behind a mythril clipboard, fellow rogues!

Well hello there! 😀 If you follow me on Twitter, you may have seen my tweet sized rant on how difficult it is sometimes to get out that awesome (pic heavy) post you’re working on, especially given the current technical issues at Rogue HQ! While we wait, I thought we might sit down around the campfire and have another chat, because I love hearing from you all :-). To keep you on the edge of your logs/rock outcroppings, here’s a tantalizing peek at the treasure to come…

Sneak peek!

On with the questionnaire!! 😀

Questing is a serious business, and as every good adventurer knows, it’s hard to get by without a bit of help and knowledge from your fellow treasure seekers. Which is the best brand of hinge grease? How do you defeat an enchanted automaton before the shine even leaves your lipgloss? Just how much beer *can* a dwarf drink in one sitting?

In the spirit of such inquiry, I have devised the Rogue Approved Questionnaire for the Extraction of Secrets. Also known as ‘Answer Me These Questions Three’. The questions are simple, and you are free to answer as fully, as tersely, as logically or as fantastically as you like. Please only use blue or black ink, and consult the orc-xaminer if you require an additional answer booklet.

You can copy and paste the questions into the comment box, or just list your answers if you prefer 🙂

The Questions

  • Have you ever tried lavender or purple blush? Would you ever try it? If you have, what did you match it with? If you haven’t, do you have your eye on one? Share! 😀

  • When you apply your foundation (or powder, or BB cream, or moisturiser, if you don’t wear any foundation type stuff), do you always apply it in the same pattern across your face/neck, or do you mix it up?

  • You’re lost deep in the Underdark, surrounded by drow and other assorted chthonic horrors, and you have time to pop on one lip product before an epic battle commences. What’s your battle lip, fellow adventurers?

Makeup Poll

I asked these guys what their favourite sheer inoffensive pink lipstick was, and they argued for HOURS. Jeez…

I’m looking forward to reading your answers! 🙂

Until next time, fellow adventurers, don’t forget to check for traps!

What’s in The Rogue’s August Wishlist Chest? Lipsticks, Blushes and Eyeliners!

Greetings from my imaginary world of awesome, fellow rogues!

I’ve been seeing so many cool wishlists around recently that I thought I’d gather up a few of my own ‘I wish’ items, and post them here for your amusement/between dungeon coffee break reading! We’re still knee deep in the giant, cable eating spiders at the moment, so I apologise for the relatively short post! I may be stealthily operating from my work computer to post this! 😉 Since there’s not as much detail as usual, I’ve included quite a few links to other related posts, both my own and others’, in case you’re hungry for more beauty reading!

Without further ado, these are the shinies – you may notice an unsurprising general colour trend… 😉

August Wishlist

WISHLIIIIIST

From top to bottom, left to right:

Makeup Geek eyeliners: The one I have here in the picture is the bloody red ‘Poison’, but I wouldn’t mind collectiong all their colours! I’ve never tried them, but they just look stunning, and the names are very rogue/adventure appropriate, in general. There’s even a gold one called ‘Treasure’ – I mean, come on! Also, I would love to own a bloody, burgundy eyeliner, since it’s not a shade you see very often!

Makeup Geek blushes: These have been getting quite a bit of blog attention/love recently, for good reason, it seems! Although quite a few shades have caught my eye, the one area of my (admittedly miniscule) blush collection that is severley underrepresented is the berry/purple/lavender end! As such, the shades I have here are Rendezvous and Secret Admirer, a berry and lavender respectively.

Too Faced Melted Lipstick in Melted Fig: Although there are many shades in this line that look lovely, Melted Fig was the first one to really catch my eye and make me go ‘Ooh’. This is strange, since you’d think the purple would be top of my list, but I am having a huge ‘muted pinks‘ thing going on right now (despite the fact that Middle Earth is currently leaving Autumn/Winter).

YSL Le Teint Encre de Peau Foundation: Well, what can I say. YSL currently makes my 3 HG foundation products, and the whole ‘Encre de Peau’ think just sounds awesome, and catpures the idea of a thin substance that still has strong tinting power. Coincidentally, Lisa Eldridge’s newest video has a positive sort of mini-review of it, which never hurts a thing in my estimation!

OCC Lip Tar in Technopagan: Seriously. I just. Whatever. This was made for me. Augh! Want. Incoherence? Yes! 😀

Hourglass Mechanical Pencil Liner: OK, despite the zany cost/use ratio that these have (by the company’s own admission, surreally enough), I just really want to try one. I don’t wear black liner all that often, and I have kind of a thing for mechanical pencils, having used one more or less since I started school! There I was, as a little 5 year old rogue, with my pencil case full of lockpicks, hinge grease, and mechanical pencils… *wipes away nostalgic tear*.

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in 03 Violet Incognito: So, it’s purple, comes in shiny artefact packaging, and has ‘incognito’ in the name. I swear companies actually have a whole sub-market for rogues, going by the names they give things. The best part is that I already love the formula, and I’ve swatched this thing – it is actually purple! Not so much of that weak-sauce burgundy copout stuff… 😛

Marc Jacobs Lovemarc Lip Gel in Cabaret: OK, so this one is really a WISHlist item. It’s a shade from the MJ line that’s only available to VIB Rouge members with Sephora! Still, when I saw the swatches on Temptalia, my little rogueish heart went pitter-pat. I already like the Lip Gel formula, and Cabaret manages to be simultaneously in the purple line, the muted pinks line and the vampy line, making it kind of the triple threat of my lipstick colour world right now. GAH! Why did it have to be VIB Rouge exclusive!! T_T

Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Poe: Come on, it’s a high performing NAVY SPARKLE LIPSTICK. I see it’s currently sold out on Spehora’s website – I think there’s a lesson here for all the mainstream brands out there: there is a market for non-mainstream lipstick colours! Please try more of them! I appreciate that KvD fans are probably more likely to go for a navy sparkle lipstick than, say, Dior’s target market, but still. 😉 Poe isn’t the only lipstick from this line I have my eye on, and my fellow bloggers have been tempting me inordinately

Urban Decay 24/7 Velvet Liner in Minx: So, I’ve read all the mixed reviews of these. And, despite being a massive fan of UD’s liners generally, I’m not sure I’d actually invest in the whole set just off the bat. However, I am actually in the market for a smudgy, smoky navy blue liner, and Minx is very tempting. OK, so are Cult and Plushie, but the blue is really what I’m after. I even just got sent a voucher for a discount on shipping with YouShop (the means by which I get my UD to Middle Earth). Gods help me… #rogueproblems

So! That was my little wishlist for August (although it kind of covers July as well, really).

Does anything catch your eye on that list? Have you tried some of the things there? How do you feel about navy sparkle lipsticks? 😀

Until next time, fellow rogues, don’t forget to check for loot as well as traps!

Loot Alert! What are Your Drugstore Favourites?

Greetings from the head of the party, fellow rogues!

No, I haven’t discovered a trap (unless you’re watching out for your wallet at the moment!), it’s something much better! Loot!

As an aside: I must apologise for recent sparse posting – the giant spiders nesting in our internet cables have struck again (there’s always at least one egg left, right?)! Things should be on the mend, but enchanted arachnids are pretty tough. There’s just no talking with them, honestly.

Back on topic: I didn’t get a chance to take swatches, unfortunately,  but there were so many ‘new’ things I saw, I just wanted to wave all the treasure at you to let you know it’s here! Since the post is a little more sparse than usual, I wanted to add a question for all you fellow adventurers out there:

What are your favourite drugstore/pharmacy makeup products? Holy grails? Epic high-end dupes?

My own favourites include Revlon’s lip products (Super Lustrous lipsticks and Colorburst Lip Butters, glosses and chubby pencils!) the Maybelline pot gel liner, and some neat neons from the Australis line. I’ve also had good times with Nyx (although sadly it’s not directly available here), and Bloom used to be available in NZ pharmacies and their lipsticks remain a firm favourite.

Inquiring rogue minds want to know! Let me know what you’re a fan of in the comments below :-D.

Right! 😀

On with the loot!

We’ve got polishes from Revlon (see some swatches on The Makeup Train here!), the Maybelline Color Elixir glosses have finally turned up (Christine has her usual impeccable reviews here!), Za seems to have some new glosses out with some fetching colours (anyone tried these?) and L’Oreal has a new line of matte lipsticks!

Loot Alert - What are your favourite drugstore makeup products?

New Revlon gel polishes – there are some pretty sparkles and fun bright colours in theis treasure chest – and the deal is still on!

Loot Alert - What are your favourite drugstore makeup products?

A couple of my favourites from what I surveyed! Pocket Aces (coral) and Showtine (shimmering dark blurple).

Loot Alert - What are your favourite drugstore makeup products?

Maybelline Color Elixir glosses! Finally! 😀 We don’t have all the colours, but more may eventuate…

Loot Alert - What are your favourite drugstore makeup products?

Some new glosses from Za – has anyone tried these? I haven’t had anything from Za yet!

Loot Alert - What are your favourite drugstore makeup products?

Aaaaand…closer up!

Loot Alert - What are your favourite drugstore makeup products?

A (relatively) new line of matte lipsticks from L’Oreal.

Phew! What do you think, fellow adventurers? Anything catch your eye? Have you tried any of these? What did you think? 🙂 Don’t forget to let me know what your drugstore favourites are in the comments below!

Happy Looting!

Until next time, fellow rogues, don’t forget to check for loot as well as traps!

The Beauty Spotlight Team: What’s in the Kitbag of a Swashbuckling Adventurer Mama?

What does an adventuring mama take in her kitbag?

What does an adventuring mama take in her kitbag?

Greetings from the depths of a rogue mum’s kitbag, fellow rogues!

Ever wondered, “What are the on-the-go essentials are for a busy Mommy Beauty Blogger?” Pammy Blogs Beauty opens up her “Mommy Bag” to share her basic, beauty, and baby/toddler go-to items! Not to mention, you have to check out her chic version of a baby bag. Hey, now that Pammy is over 40, a mother of 2, and lives in the burbs, it doesn’t mean that she has lost her cool, lol (never, gasp)!

Until next time, don’t forget to check for traps (especially where children are present)!

The Nocturnal Rogue: Adventuring with Tarte’s Rainforest After Dark Eye and Cheek Palette!

Greetings from the deafening jungle night, fellow rogues!

As you might imagine, we rogues spend quite a bit of our time in the dark. Calling this the ‘nocturnal rogue’ might seem like stating the obvious, but I couldn’t resist when I set out to write up my review of the Tarte Rainforest After Dark palette, and a recent adventure made it particularly appropriate!

Tarte Rainforest After Dark Eyeshadow Palette Swatches Review and Look

The adventuring party approaches the artefact, excitement and trepidation as thick as the jungle humidity…

I have to admit, Tarte’s really been hitting it out of the park for me, packaging -wise recently. First there was the MATTEnificent palette’s glorious purple geode. Then, I saw the adventure posting for a mysterious wooden artifact, inlaid with a golden, jewelled snake. The jewel was even reputed to be purple, and the artefact to contain glittering purple and golden magic! Well, I mean, I couldn’t tear that adventure posting off the tavern board fast enough, could I? I rounded up as many members of the adventuring party as were willing to go chasing for it, and off we set for the rainforest! Jungle temples are something we don’t usually get to raid, so everyone was quite excited. Even Khael the wizard, whose last experience with artefacts related to purple and venomous things turned out rather differently than he expected, was puffing away eagerly at his pipe.

And lo, the treasure was laid bare. Always send the rogue in first, people. Checking for traps and all that…

By the time we’d hacked our way through the undergrowth, dodged or disarmed all the dart traps and arrived in the treasure chamber, everyone was champing at the bit to get that thing open! Fortunately, I managed to convince them to let the rogue go first, just in case there were any booby traps. Aside from a clear plastic sheet with the shade names on it and a card with a couple of look ideas (not pictured) however, there were no final barriers between adventurers and treasure! The wooden (veneer on plastic ;-)) artefact contains a gloriously large mirror,  6 pans of eyeshadow, and one each of blush, bronzer and highlighter. I was particularly looking forward to the latter two, as this is the first bronzer I’ve ever owned, and the first powder highlighter too (the only other one I have being a tiny sample of Benefit’s High Beam).

Pretty… 😀 Also: no dart traps! Yay!

Let’s dive straight in, shall we? Appropriate to the ‘fall’ (it’s Autumn, people!) season that this is released for, the eyeshadows run along generally cool, purply lines. There’s a mixture of mattes, sparkly satins and metallics, and the shades cover both ‘useful’ and ‘OOH’ areas of the eyeshadow spectrum. General notes: I found most of them to be soft and very blendable, with an adequate wear time (no primer!) of around 8 hours (although eyeshadows don’t tend to migrate too much on me). The names, like those in the MATTEnificent palette, take a leaf from OPI’s book of groan-worthy half-puns, although I tend to find that these make me smile more than roll my eyes. 😉 In terms of specifics:

Bare To Explore is a matte, light pinkish/tan ‘medium skin’ colour. It’s the ‘base’ colour, essentially, although I found that if I used it as an all- over wash and then attempted to put other similar light colours over the top, it muddied them a little bit. It was great for browbone-edge-of-colours blending though, or as a crease shade (for those of us who are very pale!), when you have something like, say, UD Sin over the rest of your lid.

Make A Mauve is, well, mauve! It’s a satin eyeshadow with a sprinkling of fine golden sparkle, and is probably one of my favourites in the palette!

Plum Away With Me is a brown-undertoned plum satin, with excellent pigmentation. It’s worth noting that this shade in particular (along with Make a Mauve), are rather perfect bruise colours for the vampirically pale among us.  I say this not as a deterrent, as they are gorgeous, but you do have to be a little bit careful, as the Plum in particular packs a  bruisy colour punch (BA-dum TISH!) if you’re not!

Up to No Gold is a pigmented, smooth, metallic gold. It’s not too yellow, it’s not too white. In other words, it’s excellent, and goes so beautifully with the purples here.

The matte, camel colured Tan-gled Up in You is probably the worst shade in the palette for me. Having said that, it’s not *bad*, it was just the stiffest/driest shade, and perhaps the least exciting or useful for me in terms of colour. I found it to be a decent crease shade.

Don’t Turn A-Brown is a cool, dark brown matte. There’s not too much I can say for this one, as dark browns don’t really need much of an introduction. They’re brown. You can use ’em as a liner, you can use ’em for a smokey eye, you can use ’em for your eyebrows if the colour’s right! 😀

Eyeshadow swatches!

Next up are the cheek products! Here things get a bit harder to explain for me (at this point anyway) as I’m not really used to either bronzer or highlighter! I’ll be experimenting more with these as time goes by, so updates may be forthcoming! In purely technical terms, though, I can definitely give you the scoop 😉

Unleashed is a nice, slightly beige-based light pink blush. I say beige-based because (as you can see in my unblended swatch), the pinkness of it doesn’t stand out as much as you might expect on my vampire skin. It’s quite a nice, natural flush kind of colour, and I found it to blend easily enough and last the whole day. The only thing you might say against it is typical of my experience with Tarte blushes, which is that you have to rub a bit at the surface of the new blush to get the colour going, as it feels quite hard and smooth to start. After that though, you’re fine!

Park Ave Princess is probably the best I could have hoped for in terms of a ‘comes in a palette’ bronzer. It’s not extremely dark (which is a pro for me, but may be a ‘meh’ for darker skinned rogues), and not extremely orange, and it doesn’t have any glitter or shimmer. I’m in the process of trying to find ways to use this, but I’m still quite chuffed about owning my first bronzer anyway. I did read that the colour is different to that of other Park Ave Princesses that Tarte has released. 😉

Champagne is a VERY SHIMMERY pale gold highlighter. Highlighters are another thing that are a bit of a mystery to me. Because I already glow in the dark, I don’t tend to feel like I need one, but I do like some sparkle in my life. This highlighter blends out nicely enough, and doesn’t make you look like an absolute disco ball, but it is quite yellow-based and I feel like there are probably better powder highlighters out there. Still, a welcome addition to my hoard, as it’s the first of its kind!

let’s get Cheeky! See, I can do the pun thing too…no? No? OK…

Right! So that’s the lowdown on this rather lovely palette artefact from Tarte! All in all, I think it was worth hacking our way through miles of hostile jungle – the packaging is good fun, and great if you’re a collector, the eyeshadows are nice quality, and purple, and I enjoyed having my first foray into bronzer and highlighter territory. Is this palette going to change your life? Probably not. But it will make it that much more beautiful, and what else can you ask of a makeup product? 😀

Here’s a random look I did with the palette – you can see that the colours really do make a statement on pale skin, as I was working with a veeeeeery light hand here! I wanted a kind of sorceress look, with ‘gilding’ on the lid in the way that you see old gilding on statues; kind of worn and ‘antique’. For comparison, the actual colour of my skin is what you can see in the bottom leftish sort of area of each photo. I took the pictures looking into natural daylight, so my natural, uh, fluorescence makes the bare skin areas quite bright! Do click the picture to enlarge everything if you need more detail 🙂

Gildy. Purply. Sorceressy?

Finally, it occurred to me as I was looking at this palette that the colour scheme reminded me in some ways of both my Tarte MATTEnificent palette (review) and some shades from my Urban Decay Naked 2 palette (review). I thought I’d swatch them together for comparison, and although you can see that there are some similarities, I think there are more than enough differences to warrant owning all 3 palettes (*shifty eyes*). 😉

Palettes! Can anyone say ‘addiction to cool toned purply things?’

…aaaand the dark shades!

*Phew!* Thank you so much for sticking with me through this long jungle temple raid of a review 😉 I want to mention here that this palette swatches up quite differently on different skintones (well, I think so anyway), and I wanted to highlight some lovely reviews and gorgeous looks that others have done of this palette – might help you decide if you’re not a vampire like this rogue! The beautiful Izzie at Izzique has you covered with a *gorgeous* eye look to boot, and as always you can’t go past Christine of Temptalia’s experience and staggering dupe powers. 😀

What do you think, fellow adventurers? Do you like Tarte’s stuff? Do you also have a crippling addiction to purple things? Who do you think has the best packaging?

The practicalities: The Tarte Rainforest After Dark Eye and Cheek Palette costs US$38 for 0.7 oz / 20 g of total stuff,  is limited edition, and may be acquired from www.tartecosmetics.com or www.sephora.com. (These links aren’t affiliate, just here for your convenience!). If you are a Rogue of Middle Earth, sadly Tarte requires a US billing address, so you will need to use Ship It To, or hijack a charming US friend to buy it and ship it to you. I did the latter! ❤ ❤ you, Jaa!

Until next time, fellow adventurers, don’t forget to check for traps!
