A Rogue on the InterTubes! What are Some of this Rogue’s Favourite YouTube Channels?

Greetings from the intertubes, fellow cyber-adventurers!

OK, yes, technically I’m *always* greeting you from the intertubes, this is a blog after all, but today we’re going to delve into a different area of the vast Web that the Internet Gods cast over the Earth. Yes, today we’re going to look at a few of this rogue’s favourite YouTube channels! Some of them are specifically beauty-based, and some aren’t. In all cases I love the channel itself, and the video I’ve chosen to link in this post is just a personal favourite (so it might be a little older…or it might not!). I’ve been meaning to do this for a while actually, and while you may be familiar with some of the channels I’m listing here, I hope you find something new to love!

First up! A favourite of many , we have the incomparable Lisa Eldridge. She’s just so impossibly nice and beautiful and talented, it’s enough to make you sick. But in a good way! Her advice and philosophy on makeup and beauty has shaped much of my own, and although she hasn’t lived here for a long time, I’m totally claiming her for New Zealand! She also has a lovely blog that you can visit here, and you can find the links to her tweety and instagrammy goodness there too. This video is just a personal favourite, but I love basically everything this woman touches, so all her other videos come highly recommended!

Next up we have the stupendous Anna Akana. This girl has it all, really – she’s gorgeous, she’s smart, she’s funny, and she seems to have enough energy to fuel three suns, which I find both impressive and enviable! There’s much to love on Anna’s channel, and I think the video I’m linking here might be the only specifically beauty related one – I strongly suggest you check out her awesome web series, Riley Rewind. Because seriously, there’s nothing this girl can’t do.

No video roundup would be complete without mentioning the girl who first got me into both Urban Decay and creative eyeshadow in general! Shannon Harris (channel: shaaanxo) is gorgeous, adorably goofy and sweetly down to earth. She blends eyeshadow and applies eyeliner in ways that I still envy wildly, and she’s a good Kiwi girl to boot! I have much love for Shannon, and this video (although quite old) remains a favourite that I turn to if I need a giggle!

Speaking of eyeshadow skills and envy, I need to make some serious space here for the glory that is Klaire de Lys. I’m not sure I can actually really articulate in words how awesome her makeup artistry (for artistry it be!) actually is. The easiest way is to watch this video, which I selected almost at random from the pool of awesomeness that is her channel, and then watch all her other videos. The woman paints her own backgrounds and makes her own accessories for the videos. Seriously. Gah! Her blog is here.

For those who are waiting for a dose of geekery amongst all this makeup: I have a list of channels whose regular gaming and Let’s Play series I watch in my ‘Adventure Board’ page above, but I’ll pull out a favourite here and add a new channel to the mix!

If there happen to be any German speakers amongst my usual readership, and you’re into games at all, you probably already know this name. I’m talking, of course, about Gronkh (his real name is Erik, I think). Gronkh is (as far as I know) the pre-eminent German Youtube Let’s Player, and is singlehandedly responsible for almost all of my thesis writing. His content is great anyway, but somehow, some series make a really excellent background to writing for me. Why? Who knows (die Wissenschaftler streiten noch). Anyway, the video I’ve put in here is the first in a series that ended recently, and one that I particularly enjoyed. This particular game is entirely in English, by the way, and well worth looking into! If you can stand a bit of strong language, anyway 😉

Anybody out there play MTG? If you do, you probably already know this channel. If not, going and watching one of Evan Erwin‘s videos on the mrorangeguy channel will be an eye opening experience, a window into another world! I’ve recently been watching the set review for Magic 2015, but there’s plenty more awesome content here besides, for Magic: the Gathering fans and anyone who’s always wondered what that whole card game thing was about anyway. Geek out! 😉

What do you think, fellow cyber-adventurers? What are your favourite YouTube channels? Do you have any non-beauty related chnnels you’re keen on? Did you get into makeup because of magical things you saw on the intertubes?

Until next time, fellow adventurers, don’t forget to check for traps!

  1. Hey Syl! I didn’t know most of these! I love Shannon too.. stumbled on her channel recently and she is so sweet and funny right! Will check out the others soon!

  2. I’ve learnt so much from the Youtubes! I agree about LE and Shaaaaaaannon. Other favourites include Claire Marshall, Easy Neon, Batalash, Shameless Fripperies, and Tati.

There’s not very many others when it comes to non-beauty favourites! Yoga With Adrienne, The Tonight Show, and Flat 3 are really the only ones.

(By the way, I just linked to this post from my brand spanking new Facebook blog page cos I thought it was a good idea! Hope that’s ok :D)

    • Haha, Shaaaaaaaannon indeed 😉 She’s such a treasure!

You know, most of my Youtube viewing is actually gaming related. Beauty is in the minority! I’ve never looked for yoga channels, but now I’m intrigued!

      Link away! Thanks 🙂

  3. It’s weird, but I almost never watch YouTube makeup videos. I love Lisa Eldridge and have found her tips helpful, but in general, I much prefer written to spoken directions. I suspect this is because of my mild ADHD (I tend to space out and miss important information), but whatever the reason, blogs are a much better medium for me. I’m actually grateful that I have no interest in video tutorials and reviews, or else I’d spend *even more* interwebs time on makeup than I already do…

    • You kow, I’ve given almost all of the makeup youtubers I’ve ever regularly watched in this post. There’s a list as long as both of my arms of other, usually gaming or comedy related channels that I watch!

I totally agree with the written directions thing, actually. I don’t have anything getting in the way, but if I watch a video I kind of usually just like to veg out (or be writing thesis at the same time). The only channel I really take actual direction from is Lisa Eldridge, just because she’s so *nice* and so soothing, and her directions just make everything seem so easy and so comfortable.

Also, yes: YouTube is a vortex that you can sink into and never emerge from. Hence my cultivation of channels I can have on in the background whille I’m doing thesis. Gronkh works so well for this because, despite the fact that I can speak German, having the other language going just makes it that much easier to tune out…

  4. It’s becoming clear to me that I am an internet noob. Seriously, I am the level 15 rogue in the level 25 dungeone wearing cloth robes. I don’t follow or watch anyone on Youtube. I use it to listen to music while I’m on the computer, and occasionally when someone posts a video on their blog or a funny movie I will watch it, but I never spontaneously watch Youtube videos. Am I weird?

    • It’s OK! I can train you! 😀 For some gold, that is… 😛

Whoops, just posted this for free. Damn. Need to improve my business model…

Anyway, you’re definitely not weird. I read many more beauty blogs than I watch beauty channels. Most of the channels I do watch are gaming related, and I watch them like TV (which we don’t have). But there sre some channels, like these ones here, and especially Lisa Eldridge’s, that just deserve to be savoured 😀

  5. Hey Syl, Lisa Eldridge is my favorite! I think she’s the only Youtuber that I watch and rewatch religiously. I watch the makeup tutorials from From Head to Toe as well, and sometimes a little bit of Wayne Goss 😉

    • Wayne Goss is another one I like! 🙂

I know what you mean about Lisa E – I re watch her videos too. In fact, she’s one of the few youtubers on any topic whose videos I actually watch more than once!

  6. Hi Syl! I love Lisa Eldridge’s video. Her voice is always so calming/soothing and she’s obviously so talented, but really down to earth as well. I will have to check the others you recommended! I have a lot of YT favorites, including MakeupbyTiffanyD, From Head to Toe, Teni Panosian, bubzbeauty, and some others!

    • Lisa is just ridiculous – she’s like the nicest person on YouTube – but at the same time she tells it like it is, you know? 😉 I love her philosophy on foundation especially: only as much as you need, and only where you neeed it! Seriously, the first time she explained that I was all ‘WHUUT?!? You don’t have to put foundation *all over* your face?!?!’ and then couldn’t think why that hadn’t occurred to me before…

It’s funny the reasons one watches some channels – for example, Shannon’s makeup style (even in the serious videos, LOL) is WAY heavier than my own, but I just really love her attitude and her eyeshadow skillz. So although I don’t really take as much from her channel in the way of makeup looks as I do from LIsa’s, I still love them both!

I’m hearing a lot about From Head to Toe – might need to check that one (and a few others that have popped up in this comment section ) out!

Hehe, Lisa is a bit of a legend, it seems! I assumed pretty much everyone would know here, but she’s definitely one of my favourites! Hehe, Wayne Goss is pretty great – I love how all his video titles are in allcaps, LOL 🙂
