The Freshly Sugared Rogue: Exploring New Lip Balm Frontiers with the Fresh Sugar Berry Lip Treatment!

Greetings from the second chamber of the dungeon, fellow rogues!

Gird your loins, fellow adventurers! The process of wading into that enormous pile of miniature loot continues today as we break into the second chamber of the dungeon. This chamber is in a similar colour family to last time, but on the other end of the spectrum in terms of pigmentation and delightful smooshiness ^_^ Trust me, ‘delightful smooshiness’ is not usually a phrase you hear bandied about with regard to dungeons, but here I feel it applies. But I’m getting ahead of myself! To keep things organised, I’ll start all these posts off in a similar fashion, to whit:

I should mention first off that a large number of the minis came in the form of the Sephora Give Me More Lip holiday special set, which contains 17 lip products in three loose ‘colour schemes’: red, nude and pink. I ordered this set from Sephora through the indomitable Jaa, who was kind enough to wrangle all the goodies into a parcel small enough that it wouldn’t cost me the contents of Erebor to ship it here. Jaa was also kind enough to take me a couple of pictures of the set before the packaging had to go…

…and here the inside! So much miniature lip goodness *drools*. The Tarte pencil at the left centre is the only full-size product. Yet more photographic awesomeness from Jaa!

‘I was rather excited when I saw what this set contained, because it was basically a laundry list of brands I’ve wanted to try for the longest time. Since there are so many products here, and because I’m a rogue and we’re funny like that, I’m going to review the contents in spearate posts (or in small groups) so that I can devote proper attention to obssessively photographing each miniature lip product with other miniature things ❤

Alrighty then, let’s dig into the next little gem on the list (yet another popular choice for review from my fellow adventurers) – the Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treament in Berry! 😀

*bling* How jewel-like is that brushed metal, boysenberry-coloured packaging? *grabby rogue hands*

Can we just take a minute to talk about the packaging here? I realise I’m not the first to do this by any stretch of the imagination, but I think it warrants serious consideration. This tube is made of metal. It has heft. Heft! It has a screw closure at the base of the lid that I spectacularly failed to photograph. A screw closure. This is possibly the most securely packaged lip balm in the multiverse, and I am a fan. There’s nothing worse than pulling your roll of lockpicks out of your kitbag, only to discover that they have all become glued together with strawberry Chapstick or whatever (especially given how horrible that stuff smells). this lip balm will not do that to you. The packaging has your back. And this is just the miniature version.

It even has sunscreen. Sort of. For those sunny dungeons, don’tcherknow….

Speaking of smells, let’s start with a whiff of this. I had read various reviews likening it to everything from lemon cheese cake/lemon meringue pie to lemon Pledge, so my expectations going in were pretty much restricted to ‘lemon, probably?’. In this respect I was not disappointed, as the product does indeed smell lemony, with a sugary sweet but still fresh edge to it. Aptly named! It doesn’t have a flavour, per se, but there is a sweetness to it on the lips that is totally inoffensive. The perfume does hang around on the lips for quite a while, but since it’s a decent one I don’t really mind. It’s not like you turn away anything that obscures ‘dungeon musk’ while you’re adventuring, right? 😉

Some of the product…

While we’re on the subject of questing (yes, you may call me Queen of the Obvious Segues): you might not want to take this into the next magma cave/dragon’s lair/lost desert temple you visit. It’s currently residing in the refrigerator at Rogue HQ, standing very incongruously in the egg tray, because this is possibly one of the softest, smooshiest lip balms I have ever experienced. To be fair, the little bullet is always going to be dinky (and ADORABLE), but the susceptibility of this stuff to even relatively mild heat is incredible. I’d heard this was a bit of a characteristic of these balms, and the Internet did not lie: I opened it yesterday and pulled the whole bullet out, as it had glued itself to the inside top of the lid. No worries – I just dropped it back in and put it in the fridge to re-set, but it’s definitely something to be aware of. Even when it was not leaping (slithering?) out o the tube, it is very soft to apply.

…all of the product! I decided to keep it on ice, because, you know. Smooshy. 😀

On the topic of softness (sorry, I can’t stop now), Fresh certainly haven’t gone soft on the quantity if product they give you in this deluxe sample size. Matching the substantial packaging, there is a whole 2.2 g of smooshy goodness in here! This may or may not seem like a lot depending on your expectations from samples, but I was well pleased with it. Certainly, next to the Posietint sample, it is gargantuan 😉

Gargantuan Lips! OMG It’s Lipzilla! Et Cetera…

On to some pictures of my lips that make them look equally gargantuan! (broken cymbal noise). I’ve been dithering around talking about everything *but* the details you probably want to hear, but I thought I’d keep them down here near the lip swatch pictures, for the adventurer in a hurry ;-). This lip balm is, in short, really nice. Smooshiness and all. Meltiness and all. It has a lovely, smooth, almost jellied coating feeling on the lips, which is something I rather like in my balms when my lips are feeling dry. It lasts quite a long time on me for a lip balm (close on two hours, colour intact), and my lips feel better after using it. The colour is a moderately sheer berry pink that changes (on me) depending on the light. In cooler, darker or cloudier conditions, it takes on much more of a berry tone, while in brighter, sunnier, warmer ones it has a distinct pink edge. The difference out and about is even stronger than in the pictures, but it looks nice either way, so I’m not complaining. The only issue I have with the smooshiness, coupled with the sheerness, is that sometimes it can take a bit of work to get the colour even. Most of this work can be done by mashing your lips together a few times however, no mirror required.

So! All in all, I rather like this little balm, and it certainly lives up to the nice things said about it (and others in the line the line) by people whose opinion I respect. If you live in a hot climate and are looking for something to toss in your handbag, however, this is not the balm for you, and the full-size price tag (for a lip balm) is substantial (~$22) which may be a deal-breaker for some. I have, at last count, 1726431724 lip balms to get through, and I can honestly say that I have enough other ones that are also nice that I don’t feel the need to go out and get the full size immediately. Should the occasion arise, however, I would definitely consider it!

What do you think, fellow adventurers? Have you tried any of Fresh’s lip balms? What’s the most you’re usually willing to spend on a lip balm? Are there any other products you find particularly smooshy?? 😀

The practicalities: Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatments are usually 0.15 oz, and cost $22.50 each for the full size. Berry is a permanent shade, and they can be acquired from www.sephora.com. The Sephora Give Me More Lip set does not, sadly, appear to still be available on the Sephora website. It was ~$60. There is, however, the Give Me Some Lip set for $25, which contains a shiny Bite lip pencil, as well as some other goodies.

Until next time, fellow adventurers, don’t forget to check for traps!

  1. I wonder if the mini is more sheer than the full size. I’ve noticed with Fresh that they have some balm colors that are more creamy and some that are way more sheer and oily looking. Like Rose is sheer and jelly like while Petal and Honey are creamier. Berry seems creamier in the full sized tube to me or maybe it’s just because my lips are darker. Mine actually fared through the summer ok in my purse when in and out of the car. Any time I knew I’d be stowing my purse in the trunk, like while hiking or tracking dragons, I left it at home! Because I’m prone to lip dryness and these reapply without issue I will collect more shades. Cherry, Passion, Coral, and Petal will probably be my chosen companions for spring and summer adventures! I hate the price. Even though I love them and the packaging I feel $16 is more on target for a price than the $22.50.

    • Perhaps it is! I really think it has to do with my non-existent natural lip colour. Seriously, I add *nothing* to this, so you can see through the sheerness to the flesh-coloued lip beneath, ha! Having said that, when you look at me, full face (I know, I know) with this on, it’s a very noticeable ‘tint’. I’d be really interested to try other shades, actually. I’d rather like to give that Ruby one a go…

It’s definitely not a lip balm to leave in the car boot, LOL! I would take it skiing though. As to the price, I have been thinking about it too, and I can’t decide what I think it ought to be! >_< The packaging is really stellar, but then there's not much you can use it for after the balm is gone, and it doesn't precisely protect the balm from its biggest enemy (heat), even though it does contain it in the event of a meltdown. The balm is nice, but not precisely *revolutionary*. Still, sometimes you just want to feel nice using a nice product, and this balm checks both those boxes straight up!

  2. Oh this is goooorgeous!!! I got the original and the rose one a couple of years back from Sephora (birthday perk), and I do like them! They smell like Yakult to me (don’t know if you know what it is. It’s a Japanese drink with probiotics)! I absolutely love Berry on you, but I also did accidentally break a little of mine off in the Taipei summer heat. I heard this only happens to minis tho. Apparently the full-size version is more resilient!

    Like

    • Haha, Yakult is pretty big here! They advertise on TV and everything, and its a staple in the supermarket. I’ve never tried it (although I eat my own bodyweight in yoghurt in a week, I’m sure), so it’s interesting to know what it smells like!

I suspected the full-size would be more resilient, although I did hear it just gets a bit smushy (which I can believe). I would love to try some more of the colours – perhaps if they have a set of minis at some point I might indulge!

  3. I have this same mini when I got it in a trio of these Fresh minis. I really like this color, but recently I haven’t been reaching for it, I don’t know why. Maybe because it’s such a bold color!

  4. Berry looks lovely on you! Personally I’m not a fan of these balms as they taste bad, look patchy and costs close to $30 here. Really hate to rain your parade but the packaging gets scratched up pretty quickly so the pretty white font starts to disappear.

Erm… but I do think you should get your hands on Tom Ford Stavros if that helps? *ducks and runs out of post*

    Like

    • Haha, you should see what the packaging looks like now after a coupe of weeks in various bags. 😀 Funnily enough, I don’t mind that so much as long as the thing is sturdy and doesn’t uncap. At least for lip balms. If I dinged up my YSL lipstick my eye would twitch, I gotta tell you.

I can’t imagine what they’d cost here. I’m pretty sure the Benefit balms are over $40 each, and Burt’s Bees are like $20 a pop or something. when I say I’d consider getting one full size, I do so from behind that wall of 182753176532 other lip balms I need to use up. In principle, I want one of these. In practice, even my NZ-hardened wallet would probably tell me to f8ck off. At least it’s good lip balm (for my lips). What bad taste do you get?! I just got ‘sweetish’. O_O

I highly doubt Stavros (or any of the decent ones) is still available *sadface*… I haven’t looked because I can’t afford one at the moment anyway, LOL!

      • I got bitter dungeon bile on the original lemony one. Admittedly, the Plum version didn’t seem as bad but the patchiness was a dealbreaker for me. Anyway, I like some of Fresh’s scented things and bath products. Just not a fan of the lip stuff unfortunately!

        Like

      • You don’t have to be 🙂 Ick to the dungeon bile >_<. I definitely don't get that, but then I only tried one shade. I was a bit nonplussed about the patchiness that occurs with berry, and if it weren't easily fixable by lip smooshing, I would have come down harder on it. Lip balms are actually a rather tricky thing to review – I tend to find people have more variable experiences/preferences with them than with lipsticks (understandable), so I always end up feeling a little…useless? 😀 Do you find that with some of the stuff you review?

  5. i’ve always felt the price was steep for what it is but the deal breaker for me is the chemical based spf. too bad, i do like the actual product and packaging. like Sunny, i tried them via Sephora Bday gift. my favorite lip balm to take skiing is Elizabeth Arden’s 8hr Lip Protectant Stick. when you only need to reapply after lunch while on the slopes, you know your lip balm is heavy duty enough for anything! i’ve been looking forever for a more natural replacement but so far no luck 😦

  6. I bought a set of the Fresh lip balms and love them! They all look very fresh and natural on my lips, and they are also great for layering over other lipsticks. If you have a lipstick that’s too beige, pink, or zombie-like, just swipe one of these over it, and presto, problem is fixed! And it comes with SPF15, too.

    • Hi Katherine! Welcome to the Painted Rogue ^_^ I’m glad you’re loving these 🙂 I’d be tempted to get myself a set of minis of these so I could try out some more shades – it’s great that it has sunscreen in, but even more great that it doesn’t taste like it has sunscreen in it, hah!

      • Thanks for the welcome, sylireal! I think your review of Berry was spot on. They’re pricey at $22 each, but getting the sets was the most cost-effective way to try these. Honey and Rose are kind of light for me, but I like Berry, Coral, Plum, and Passion. If you get a set and layer them over lipsticks, you can probably come up with a hundred different lip colors. You will be quite the Painted Rogue 🙂

      • I would indeed! I’m experimenting at the moment with layering Posiebalm over stuff, believe it or not – like blotting lipsticks, it’s a bit of a hit-or-miss process, but it’s fun ^_^ Appeals to the research scientist in me, LOL! There may even be spreadsheets involved…

    • Yay! ❤ I shall get my sh1t together shortly and see if I can dig out that old list of topics to see where we got to on it, LOL!

This is a really pretty shade, and was actually 'darker' in real life than I expected it to be! It doesn't really show in the pictures, sadly, but there is a rather stealth-vampy cast to it!

  8. Berry looks very nice on you. I seriously hesitate at the price tag though – yikes – mostly because I know I would destroy this. I’m pretty hard on my makeup.

I bought some of Ulta’s tinted lip balm over Christmas, and I have to say I’m in love. They don’t have an SPF (unfortunately), but they make my perpetually chapped lips smooth. I did a review of them over on my Tumblr if you care to check them out: http://retromaven.tumblr.com/post/107317735441/ulta-balm-bash-review-these-are-sadly-no-longer

    • It is a tricky price point for something that is both a lip balm (not exactly a huge shortage of options in that field, even tinted), and it’s kind of a fickle formula. It’s pretty much living permanently in the fridge at the moment, but then it is hot here at the moment. Definitely better in winter, hah! 😀

I hear a lot of good things about Ulta’s in-house ranges, actually! *goes to check review* 🙂

  9. So nice of you to mention me again and again! You really don’t have to, Syl! ^_^

Our experience with this product is very similar! I, too, love the screw-on cap (what a great invention!), the lemony scent (sooo good!), the soft texture (although a little too easy to smush!), and the longevity (for a lip balm is pretty good!). I still haven’t tried the Berry shade, though, but I know Erin has been raving about it, too! Thank you, you enablers! Haha.

(I have heard from my friends in Thailand that these do melt very easy in hot weather! Glad to know the freezer trick!! ;D)
