Berries in The Snow! Atmospheric Adventuring with Bite Beauty Palomino Lipstick

Greetingsย from back at the very start of the dungeon, fellow rogues!

First of all: A very Merry Roguemas to all of my fellow adventurers out there! Whether your quest be great or small, whether you are beset by gelatinous cubes or swimming in golden treasure, I hope you had a lovely celebration with family, friends and as few paladins as possible. I have a few pictures of my own Roguemas on Instagram, if you’re curious as to how a rogue celebrates. It involves fewer daggers than you might think… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Righty ho, fellow adventurers! It’s time to begin wading into that enormous piile of miniature loot I showed you the other day. I should mention first off that a large number of the minis came in the form of the Sephora Give Me More Lip holiday special set, which contains 17 lip products in three loose ‘colour schemes’: red, nude and pink. I ordered this set from Sephora through the indomitable Jaa, who was kind enough to wrangle all the goodies into a parcel small enough that it wouldn’t cost me the contents of Erebor to ship it here. Jaa was also kind enough to take me a couple of pictures of the set before the packaging had to go…

…and here the inside! So much miniature lip goodness *drools*. The Tarte pencil at the left centre is the only full-size product. Yet more photographic awesomeness from Jaa!

ย I was rather excited when I saw what this set contained, because it was basically a laundry list of brands I’ve wanted to try for the longest time. Since there are so many products here, and because I’m a rogue and we’re funny like that, I’m going to review the contents in spearate posts (or in small groups) so that I can devote proper attention to obssessively photographing each miniature lip product with other miniature things โค

Accordingly, today we start with one of my most anticipated items, and a popular choice for the first review from you guys – the Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick in the shade Palomino! ๐Ÿ˜€

Bite Beauty Palomino Lipstick Review and Swatches

A lipstick, lying quitely on a snowy, frozen pond. If only all quests were so tranquil…

Even though it’s currently Summer here in Middle Earth, I thought I would go with a wintry theme for this post. After all, the greater percentage of my readership is currently in the grip of varying degrees of cold weather, and there’s something about the combination of bold pink, matte black and snowy white that really tickles my dagger holsters. Did you know that baking soda makes excellent snow for miniature model terrain? No? Well, now you do ^_^ .

That thrill when, after a long trek through snowy landscapes, you see the treasure poking through the snow…

As should be obvious from the photos (but isn’t) the lipstick is miniature. I don’t own a full size Bite lipstick to compare it to, but it’s like any miniature lipstick you’ve seen before. It is tiny and sleek and almost insufferably adorable. I didn’t have any problems with applying the lipstick (i.e. it didn’t break off), but I was very careful about application. Probably it helps that the Bite formula is quite a soft and creamy one (assisted no doubt by the 26 degree C weather we’ve had recently). Accordingly, application is very smooth and easy, although you’ll want to be careful about getting crisp edges, as the pigment-saturated formula will stain a little if you go outside the lines.

Adorable mini lipstick is adorable. Also, DAT COLOUR. O_o

The colour in the bullet is ‘hot pink’ to me, almost a Barbie pink, but perhaps a little darker and more fuchsia. Interestingly, this mini bullet has a sort of wood-grain like pattern to it; this is almost certainly an accident of maufacture/transport/whaever, but I quite like it ^_^ The lipstick does have a scent, kind of a…fruity/herbal one? It’s very faint, and hard to place. All I know is that it’s inoffensive, and doesn’t smell like either lipstick base or vanilla, which are the usual suspects. Possibly this has something to do with (as I’ve heard) Bite Beauty’s lipsticks being made from all food-grade ingredients, and it does actually smell more ‘edible’ than your average lipstick.

Who said lipsticks don’t grow on trees? OK, no-one, although I believe Charlotte Tilbury is implying they might…

I am pleased to report that this little gem from Bite totally lived up to my hopes and expectations from the brand. I heard creamy and hydrating…it was creamy and hydrating. I heard excellent pigmentation and smooth satin finish…right again on both counts! I heard good wear time and soft stain…it lasted four hours on me, and left a pretty decent fuchsia stain. What can I say, fellow adventurers? If you’re looking for a kitbag staple that will take you from snowy trek to dungeon deep to feasting table in the tavern, this is it. The colour is bold without being brash, adds a fantastic pop of colour to brighten a wintry day or glow in the summer sun, and keeps your lips happy while you wear it (well, mine didn’t complain!). If you have yet to investigate the Bite brand, maybe consider picking something up and giving it a go – especially when all these sets and things go on special in January… just sayin’… ๐Ÿ˜‰

The lovely Palomino, in full glory to the left, and then blotted gently to the right.

As you can see in the swatches above, the hot pink of the bullet has a deeper, berrier leaning on the lips that I absolutely love. I think it adds a touch of sophistication to what is, in real life, quite a bright colour. The finish is a beautiful smooth, plump satin. You also have some options with this colour – you can wear it full strength, blot it down for a slightly sheerer, slightly more matte (but still luminous) colour, or thin it down with lip balm for a glossier, more subtle effect. Naturally, I forgot to take a photo of that last option, but I’m sure you can figure it out. The only tip I’d mention is to make sure it’s a lip balm that itself stays put on your actual lips, as opposed to seeping outside the lines. You can be sure the pigment will go with it! Although I haven’t tried it myself yet, I rather think this might be a good candidate for a ‘lipstick you can use as a cream blush’, too…

More lipstick porn… and miniature artificial ice porn too, if that’s what polishes your daggers ^_^

I can believe people who say that these lipsticks die in the heat – mine was nicely creamy though still solid, but it’s one that I’d be mindful of the storage for, especially if you live in a country where things actually get *hot*! Still, if disaster strikes, that’s what either a refrigerator, or the holy trinity of lipstick repair (little pot/lipbrush/microwave) is for! ๐Ÿ˜€ I’m prepared to deal with a little potential meltiness if it means my lipstick can double as emergency dungeoneering rations, but maybe avoid taking it on that trip to the bowels of the magma cave…

What do you think, fellow adventurers? Have you tried any of Bite’s lipsticks? What’s your favourite luminous fuchsia/berry/hot pink lipstick at the moment? How’s the weather where you are? ๐Ÿ˜€

The practicalities: Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipsticks are usually 0.15 oz, and cost $24 each for the full size. Palomino is a permanent shade, and they can be acquired from The Sephora Give Me More Lip set does not, sadly, appear to still be available on the Sephora website. It was ~$60. There is, however, the Give Me Some Lip set for $25, which contains a Bite lip pencil, as well as some other goodies.

Until next time, fellow adventurers, don’t forget to check for traps!

  1. What a beautiful shade on you! Love it!
I have only tried Bite lip gloss but their “food grade” lippies do sound like an awesome option.
Palomino reminds me of the Revlon Cherries in The Snow which is another pink red with lots of white thrown in. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. i love the snow theme syl! thanks for the extra effort to make entertaining photos for us! Palomino looks so lovely on you. the wood grain texture is probably from the drastic temp change from the cold air during transport to warm weathers since the lipstick has a high shea butter content. i had a Lipstick Queen do this but ugly bubbling instead of pretty wood grain. luckily, they exchanged it. my Bite minis are stored in the upstairs bathroom which can get to mid 80ยบF in the summer but it’s suffered no problems.

    • You’re welcome, joy! ๐Ÿ˜€ I did suspect that the texture had something to do with the storage, it was just unusual compared to what I usually see, which is the bubbling like you mentioned with LQ. Glad to hear your Bite stuff is holding up to the heat – what’s your favourite one?

    • Hi Whitney! ^_^ You should definitley give this a go if you like Bit things generally – I can’t wait to try some more stuff from them, which will be easily justified considering the rate at which I am going through this mini… muahahahah!

  3. OMG this is so hot!!! I was like “no this can’t be right! It’s not snowing where she is!” The baking soda idea is pretty genius ๐Ÿ™‚ I need to blog about my Quince ASAP. I’m really impressed with Bite!

    • Ehehehe ๐Ÿ˜‰ I know right? Is there anything baking soda *can’t* do? ๐Ÿ˜€

I wana hear about Quince! ๐Ÿ˜€ I really wish I’d splurged and gotten that Bite holiday set in the tin, actually. Still, since I didn’t perhaos I can put the money toward more specific shades…

  4. Holy kitten dropping, Palomino is GORGEOUS! I want it… Seriously, it looks suuuuuuuper pretty, Syl. It’s snowing here in Belgium now by the way and I freakin’ love it. I just hope that my plane won’t get cancelled tomorrow night because apparently in Switzerland shit is going down. And with shit I mean tons of snow.

    • Urk, I know this is rather belated in wi=riting, but I hope all went smoothly for your travels! I always read comments as soon as they come in, so you can be sure I was crossing my fingers for you!

I wish it snowed in my part of Middle Earth, because I love me some skiing. Sadly, our climate is resolutely humid, maritime and subsubtropical (if that’s a thing). Which means we get rain *sigh*.

You should definitely get some Bite stuff! They have so many lovely colours, and SO many different product types that I want to try. I’m glad I started with the traditional lipstick, though, because reviews of them on Temptalia is what first got me onto the idea of the brand!

  5. Looks gorgeous on you Syl!! love the snow in the background !! Its the first non-white christmas that we’ve had in this part of Canada in YEARS now so that was different but Im loving it. In no rush for another snow storm. I have the BITE minis set of 4 and am so in love with the texture of their lippies too! They do live up to the hype for sure..and then some. Happy holidays xox

    • I have this exact issue all the time. It was one of the reasons I was so into the idea of getting the GMML set, especially with the 20% off sale. So many brands I wanted to try! I see the Bite stuff come up on NZSale (like Hautelook) not infrequently, but they’re the same price as they are in the US normally (i.e. not actually on sale) and the shipping stings through them. Much better to have a mini opportunity to try them out!

    • Hi Lynda! ๐Ÿ˜€ Sorry it’s taken me a little time to reply to your comment >_<

I was so surprised when I went to check the price on the Sephora website and couldn't find the set! T_T Last year they seemed to have all the sets, flogging them off cheap in January (including last year's Bite tin set), so I sort of assumed that was what always happened…

At least the actual contents of the set weren't LE holiday stuff though *phew* Do you have any of Bite's stuff?

    • Welcome to the Painted Rogue! ๐Ÿ˜€ This one is indeed a gorgeous shade – I really love how it’s bright without being crass about it, LOL! I prefer the ‘before’ blotting shot too, personally, but I just couldn’t resist showing how well it blotted down to a ‘matte’! I try it with most lipsticks, but don’t tend to show the more, uh, ‘mixed’ results, since it doesn’t really seem fair to the product (since it didn’t technically claim to be blottable), hah! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. Glad you reviewed this! Bite Beauty very high on my wishlist but it’s so hard to get hold off! I really like the lip duo they have with this shade and Violet. I think that’s one shade you’ll really like! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I know, right? They need to be more widespread, with products this nice! Hehe, you know, I have looked at that lip duo ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’d really love to get my hands on some more shades, and you’d better believe Violet is one of them!

  7. The very first order I made from Sephora was for Bite! The 4 mini high pigment pencils in a tin & I love’m – my favourite fuschia/berry/hot pink would be ‘Quince’, from that set ๐Ÿ™‚
(I like the look of Palomino…but I was expecting something much paler and more gold)

    • Hah, yes, the name does rather bring to mind a different colour – I sometimes wonder who exactly decides on the colour names at any given company, because some of them seem to have…interesting colour associations, LOL!

Eee! I was *so* tempted to try and get both this year’s (and earlier last year’s) Bite holiday tin sets. I still want one, hah! Quince looks gorgeous – having tried the traditional lipstick formula from them, i’d love to try the pencil one at some point!

  8. You have the best lip swatches, Syl! โค I really, really, really like the blotted version! I like lipsticks that stain but I probably won't attempt to use it on my cheeks because I'd sure make a mess. The baking soda does look like snow! Where do you keep all of your mini models, Syl? They look like they would take up a lot of "horizontal" space!

    • Aww, thank you, Jaa! But really the star photos in this post are your ones, LOL! (((Jaa)))

Yeah, the cheek thing is a bit of a trial and error process. Some lipsticks work really well, but even then you have to do a lot of careful blending. Why bother, you ask? I dunno really – must be the MacGyver in me ๐Ÿ˜‰

The minis are all kept in boxes of varying size, on the hobby desk, or generally scattered around Rogue HQ. It’s pretty much a map of a miniature fantasy landscape in here, if you squint your eyes ๐Ÿ˜€
