The Rogue’s Ultimate Pocket Guide to Stealthy Pink Lipsticks – I Need YOU!

Greetings from the pocket of an adventuring rogue, fellow..uh, adventuring rogues!

Today’s post is designed to help you out on those mornings when you have to be somewhere in five minutes (or less..or more..or you’ve gotten confused because of that wibbly wobbly timey wimey spell the wizard cast last night), and you can’t decide on a lipstick. You know, the druid and the wizard are nagging at you to get going, despite having agonized over their robes while you were checking the newly hired horses for traps, and you just need to look awesome and feel comfortable for any occasion…those times? We’ve all been there.

Adventuring with friends - who won't wait for you to choose a lipstick...

First they hassle you to get on with the whole lipstick thing, and now they have no idea where they’re going. This is what happens when you let the wizard lead, honestly…

In such difficult moments, I highly recommend the following: you know how you often have somewhere close to the door where you keep your extra daggers, hideout keys, Amulet of Not Getting Splashed By Passing Carts, etc? You need a Magical Chest of Inoffensive Pink Lipsticks, too. Like this one:

.

Magical Chest of Inoffensive Pink Lipsticks

A Magical Chest of Inoffensive Pink Lipsticks, awaiting your command…

They’re great. You just open it up, tell it what you want (or, you know, just stick your hand in), and if you’ve stocked it correctly you’ll always pull out something appropriate. Here, I’m going to suggest that classic of everyday wear, the pink lipstick (or gloss). If your everyday situation involves reds, you can tailor it to that. Or purples. Whatever floats your little rogueish seagoing craft. 🙂

Magical Chest of Inoffensive Pink Lipsticks

Inside… no, there are no teeth. It’s not a mimic…promise 😉

A pink lipstick is pretty much always appropriate. It adds bloom to your complexion and makes you look healthier (handy when you’ve been hit by a Hex of Withering or too many deadlines). You can work it with a smoky eye (good for tavern brawls or evenings at the opera) or a simple hint of liner (perfect for low key weekday adventures) and everything in between! It’s natural, pretty, and freshens up any outfit (great if you’ve just been in the Underdark for an extended period – uh, that’s some gelatinous cube you have cliniging to your shoe, by the way). Everyone has their own favourite ‘MLBB’ pink shade, whether it leans pinker, peachier, browner or beiger – if you’re looking for inspiration for a handy Magical Chest of Inoffensive Pink Lipsticks, here are a few of my favourites…

(Links to reviews are at the bottom of the post, along with a call to action!)

A Rogue’s Ultimate Pocket Guide to Inoffensive Pink Lipsticks (and how to order them out of your magical chest)

Now, in the interests of being more comprehensive, my fellow adventurers, I want to ask you: what would you put in such a chest (doesn’t have to be pink). While we are on the subject of inoffensive, MLBB, all-purpose pink, what are your favourites? I’m keen to hear from both fellow vampires, and non vampires alike! Help me out here, friends, and maybe I can update this post with some tips from you all to make it truly the ultimate Pocket Guide for adventurers! If you’ve got a review/swatch I can link to, so much the better! 🙂

  1. Hey Syl, what a wonderful round-up for all your pink goodness! I usually go for coral, and the sadly discontinued Dior Spring Ball Addict Extreme is still my go-to (I have TWO backups and I never buy backups). When it comes to pink, my all-time favorite is Guerlain Shalimar. I also love Guerlain Rose Grenat, but that’s a Rouge G so it’s much bolder than what I’d wear when I have nothing special going on 😉

    • Isn’t that always the way? You find the perfect thing…and then they discontinue it, or it was LE, or (in my case) it’s the one ‘Asia Exclusive’ we don’t get here in NZ. *sigh*

Thank you for your favourites! Do you mind if I put them up on the list (which I’m going to have to think of a better way to display) with a link to your associated review(s)? 🙂

      • I have a tube of peach parfait somewhere in the house but somehow the its almost glittery on my lips which isn’t a good look! On you it looks far far better!
For me I’d say Nars Dolce vita lipstick is a great MLBB pink also there is one from Bobbi Brown a treatment lip shine lipstick in Desert Rose which looks great! 🙂

        Like

      • Hehe, a rogue does love her glitter, LOL! Having said that, it doesn’t come across as *too* glittery on me, which is nice for everyday. I think it’s probably because my lips are so pale that the colour of the lipstick is more arresting than the sparkle.

Aha! Another vote for Dolce Vita 😉 I kind of saw that one coming from you, though! Do you mind if I link to some of your posts with those in them?

  2. I totally agree with you! A pink lipstick is always appropriate. You just need to find a right shade. I used to sport light pale pink colors a lot and Revlon Prim Rose was something I could put on autopilot. Nowadays I need something brighter and maybe a little warmer, and I go for Dior Addict Diorkiss all the time. Lancome Lip Lover in Lip Lover is always in my cosmetic pouch and I use it whenever I forget to bring “the lippy of the day”.
And for those confusing mornings, a makeup tray really helps. Larie (eyeheartit) did a post once and I put one together soon after. But my tray is not nearly as cool as your Magical Chest! 😉

    • Hi Lena! *waves* 😀

Ooh… I like the sound of your picks! I have a Lip Lover myself (Rose Contreretemps?) that I like and REALLY need to get onto reviewing.. T_T #failblogger. Hehe, the magical chest certainly makes the process of rummaging around for a lipstick that little bit more entertaining. I think I need to line it though – it’s pretty hard on the packaging, LOL!

Do you have reviews of your favourites? Do you mind if I link to them (mentioning you, obviously) in this big fat guide? 😀

Someday, I will find a true orange lipstick that I can wear, and I will share it with you all (hopefully your retinas don’t burn out…) 😛 Is there a colour you’re still on the fence about? What’s next on your list of bold lipstick quests?

      • Well, Sephora is expanding into Australia (and promising to price match to its American stores – you can bet that’s lit a fire under the retailers there with their price gouging!), so maybe there’s hope for the future 😉 I doubt Sephora will consider our ~5 million total population particularly tempting though, LOL!

  4. Hey Syl! You got quite a handful of pretty pinkie lipsticks here! I have yet to get my hands on MJ Have We Met?!! Ugh. I know! Guerlain Rose Lip looks especially lovely, too.

Mine is not technically a MLBB (because I don’t like my natural lip color! LOL) shade but when I’m in a rush I grab either Dior Holiday or Cruise Addict Extreme Lipstick (http://www.hellojaa.com/reviews/dior-addict-extreme-lipstick) or MAC What A Feeling! Huggable Lipcolor (http://www.hellojaa.com/reviews/mac-huggable-lipcolour) or Tom Ford Forbidden Pink (http://www.hellojaa.com/reviews/tom-ford-lip-color-22-forbidden-pink-asia-exclusive-shade)! 🙂

    • Hehe, thanks 🙂 Well, that’s the thing about being a lipstick addict. You…accrue a lot of lipsticks. I’m guessing that next to yours, my eyeshadow collection looks pretty pathetic, LOL! Like a dragonlet’s first attempt at a hoard…

Do you have any favourites you want to add to the list? I’m betting there’s a Smashbox something out there, right? 😉

  5. That is quite the collection. Been robbing a lot of lipstick vaults, I see!

Stealthy pinks and I never did well before, but two did wander into my stash this past summer: Maybelline The Elixir in 090 Rose Redefined and Sonia Kashuk Shine Luxe Sheer Lip Colour in 25 Sheer Fuchsia. Both are terrific. Yeah, I see you there, lurking at the Maybelline counter already!

  6. Ugh, if you upload one more photo of Demure, I might be forced to buy it. STOP THAT. 😉

Medium pinks have never been my favorite, but the two inoffensive pink lipsticks I wear most often are NARS Dolce Vita (you saw that one coming…) and NYX Perfect. In general, though, I prefer the nude/brown-leaning MLBBs to the brighter, pinker ones. Revlon Pink Truffle is an old favorite, and I just bought the Revlon Lacquer Balm in Coy, which looks like a deep pink-brown sparkly rose on me.

    • Muahaha! It’s payback for you always looking so awesome in berry/taupe/everything. I would be interested to know what your magical colour-altering natural lip colour would do to Demure, actually. On me things tend to run very true to tube, as it were (unless they are Revlon Fire and Ice, of course).

Yes, I did rather see Dolce Vita coming, but it’s perfect for this list! Browny pinks are totally a part of the ‘inoffensive everyday stealthy pink lipstick’ genus. I am kind of jealous of Coy. It’s one of those shades that I really want to look awesome on me, but I’m never sure if it will… by the same token, I wish that they accepted returns on this country…

  7. I like this description: stealthy pink. YESSSS.

My favorites are Laura Mercier…something. Baby Lips, I think. Shiseido Rubelite, Dior Garconne. Dior Grege is pretty, too, but I only ever had a sample. And Dior Enchanted Rose lip gloss, which was LE. T_T Ok, so apparently I have a lot of these. Damnit.

  8. I change up lip colors a lot and veer toward brights, darks and unconventional person. I rarely wear nudes. However, sometimes a MLBB shade is the only way to go. Estee Lauder Pure Color in Pinkberry is definitely MLBB. This is an oldie, but it is my other favorite, Maybelline Wet Shine Diamonds in Pretty Knit (LE).

      • LOL, I assumed as much, but I thought the same – it kind of works even with the typo/autocorrect fail etc. Mortifyingly, the typo that I most often make is ‘nads’ instead of ‘hands’ somehow. So I’m always talking about wanting to get my ‘nads’ on something… T__T (until I catch it and correct it, of course/ Hopefully. Oh Gods.)

        Like

    • You know, I was just looking at Pinkberry the other day! ~spooky~ (not really, but you know what I mean).

Good grief, I remember when Wet Shine Diamonds was a thing here. I actually bought one – one of the first lipsticks I ever bought actually. I was pink of some sort, and I remember being colossally disappointed that it wasn’t nearly as ‘wet’ looking as I hoped… but this is YEARS ago – do they still make that line?

    • It happens. Bright lipsticks are so exciting! I’m thinking of extending these guides in the future to cover other colours, actually, so your day shall come!! 😉

But if this is an excuse to acquire more stealthy pink lipsticks, I certainly won’t stand in your way 😉

  9. Smashing lipstick guide! I think there is no more fitting storage solution for lip sticks (and pretty much anything) than a treasure chest. I must, however, disagree if it come to dwarf wizards. They might at first seem confused and more interested in their pipe, but in the end they have a nose for arcane artifacts and tomes of arcane lore. However, I would never trust the Paladin, they always lead you to some undead folk to smite…

  10. Helpful post! MLBB is tough for me, my natural lip color is a very dull, dusky sort of blue-red color on my rather fair, cool (NW20-ish) face. What I need is something to brighten up the duskiness a bit, making me look more alive and livelier; most ‘nude’ colors have a distinct corpse effect on me, as do any colors that are lighter than my natural lip color, leaving a huge part of the universe of lip colors out of the running for me. At the same time my hair and eyes are medium brown, so both cool and warm makeup colors can look good on me, if done right.

For easy-to-apply, flattering pinks on me Make Up Forever Rouge Artist Natural in N27, an ‘iridescent blue-pink’, is the best MLBB (for me) I’ve ever found. It’s pinker and brighter than my natural lip color, which is more dusky-blue than this lipstick, so it offers the perfect correction. It’s intense but sheer, so it’s easy to apply and lets my own color show through. I strongly recommend the Rouge Artist Naturals for this, there is such a wide range of pink shades in this line that I think there must be something good for almost any skin tone. I also have N34, a more neutral sheer pink, and N35, an ‘iridescent pink-orange’ that looks wonderful on me when I want to wear a warmer color. There’s also a strawberry pink, various beige pinks, etc., sparkly colors as well as shiny colors.

Other great, easy, inoffensive pinks I own include Laura Mercier Stickgloss in Brown Sugar (a sheer, cool, ‘nude’ pink that doesn’t make me look like a corpse despite having beige/brown in it), Laura Mercier Gel LIp Color in Heartbreaker (a semi-sheer peachy pink that says ‘happy summer’ to me), Laura Mercier Sheer LIp Color in Baby Lips (a sheer warm pink), and NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in New Lover (a warm, sparkly, peachy-pink gloss in a pencil). I wear gloss infrequently, but Urban Decay Lip Junkie Lip Gloss in Thrashed is a beautiful cool, light pink shimmer, and the same formula in Naked is a reliable pinky neutral that i have because samples of it come with a lot of UD purchases. The formula seems a bit thick, tacky, and tingly to me, but I do love the color Thrashed, and Naked has been useful on more than one occasion. Opaque, and therefore requiring a bit more effort, but very good, inoffensive, pinks I own are Too Faced La Creme Lip Color in Razzle Dazzle Rose (a cool pink rose) and Pink Chocolate (a ‘berry brown’ that disproves the idea that I can’t wear brown lipstick — it just has to have a *lot* of pink in it).

    • Phew! what an amazing comment! 😀 It sounds like you have an impressive stealthy pink wardrobe there.

I totally hear you on the corpse-nude thing. The whole nude lip trend is something I’d quite like to see die down – but I mean in the sense of really editorial nudes and the concealer lip thing. And obviously I’m biased because of my NWVampire skintone, LOL!

I really want to try the Rouge Artist Naturals! I love the two Rouge Artist Intense lipsticks I have (#15 and #49), and I’ve heard more than a few raves about them. You’re also not the only person even on this comment trail who has mentioned the Laura Mercier Baby Lips shade! The UD lipglosses are tricky fo rme too – I have a couple of little samples (the one that came with the Naked 2 palette and the one that came with the Fun palette), and while I like the colours alright, I totally hear you on the stickiness. On me, the tingle makes the edges of my lips swell up in an awkward reverse-collagen effect that’s quite alarming, so they don’t see a lot of use, LOL!

I find the same with brown lipsticks – so long as it has a healthy pink tinge to it, we’re all good! Browns still aren’t my favourite, but I’m definitely warming to them (or cooling, perhaps, since I prefer the pink based ones…?)

Thank you for all the suggestions! I shall add all this goodness to the guide shortly! 😀

  11. I really like all of these! I’m surprised how well the Demure balm work on you. I thought it would wash you out but I bet it’s great with heavy eye makeup! I need to find an opaque pink that completely hides my natural lip shade while still looking natural!

    Like

    • Demure is a really interesting one. I expected it to be washy on me, but it turned out to be a pretty perfect ‘nude’ shade. It’s definitely pale, but somehow stops short of being *too* pale. Pinks can be tricky if you want to combine opaque+ natural, I agree – most of my favourites lean toward the sheer-buildable end. The Laura Mercier one is pretty opaque though – maybe something in that line?

      Like

  12. Ugh Syl you look SO good in pinks! Demure looks freaking beautiful — and not so “demure” after all 😉 (nudge nudge wink wink NUDITY)

I don’t have a perfect MLBB shade just yet, but Revlon Lip Butter in Sugar Plum comes close. I think my perfect lipstick would have to be darker than pink, but maybe I just haven’t found the right pink yet!

Heh – Demure is my (unexpected) favourite ‘nude’! It’s basically the only thing I have that is even remotely white based, as usually this is a bad idea for me. Somehow, though, the sheerness and peachiness in Demure…works.

Do you haz a swatch/review/look using Sugar Plum that I can toss up on the board for the people to see? Hopefully you might get a couple of ideas from this little thing I’m trying to put together (assuming you *want* to find a perfect MLBB pink, of course – not actually obligatory!)

    • Well, it’s the one perk of being super pale with pink undertones, I suppose, LOL! ‘pink with a hint of plum and brown’ totally counts. If that’s the MLBB for your skintone, then I want to share it here so other people in the same boat might be able to find a new favourite 🙂 I probably wouldn’t do a whole section just on ‘pink-with-a-hint-of-mauve-that-looks-plum-in-mid-morning-light, or we’d all go nuts… 😛
