Nude Dungeoneering! The Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette Review

Greetings from safely behind the cleric’s Turn Undead spell, fellow rogues!

Funny thing: despite Urban Decay being one of my favourite brands ever, and its products featuring (one way or another) in quite a lot of my posts, I don’t actually have that many dedicated reviews. I think the only one is the review of their (excellent) Venom lipstick, and I’ve decided that needs to be rectified. I may not be at the forefront of their latest releases, but I think there’s always room for a rogue’s perspective on any kitbag staple, right? Of course there is 😀 So without further ado, I bring you (slightly infested with the risen dead), The Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette!

Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette Review and Swatches

Cap’n Skelzor and his crew were trying to figure out what ‘Naked’ meant (and why there were two of them) when we happened on the scene…

I’ll get this out of the way early: I have a special fondness for Urban Decay because of how accessible they make their products to (in my case) NZ consumers despite having no stores or regular stockists here. Sure, you have to use a parcel forwarding service (NZ Post’s You Shop or the American one suggested by UD), but the total for buying and shipping a Naked 2 palette to New Zealand (mildly dependent on exchange rate) is , in my experience, ~NZ$75. US readers may choke on their campfire rations a bit, but people who buy them and resell them here usually want ~NZ$110 (plus shipping) for a Naked palette, so you can see the maths works out well in my favour to go with UD directly. There are other websites around, but I’m never entirely sure of the authenticity of the product. Anyway, babbling aside, I just wanted to say thanks to UD for making their stuff accessible here at the ends of the earth, at the US price. I much prefer that to the usual model of opening a store/counter here and doubling (or tripling, MAC?) the prices!

Cap’n Skelzor’s motley crew, shortly before the Cleric went all Turn Undead on their a-… ischia?

Anyway, on with the actual review…

Right! For anyone who’s just come up from an extended expedition into the Underdark, the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette is a sturdily metal-tinned offering that contains twelve neutral toned eyeshadows (four matte and eight shimmery). The colours run the gamut from pale matte yellow, through metallic copper, taupe and warm silver to deep matte black. The palette is supposed to be ‘the cool-toned one’ of the three Nakeds – this is most definitely a relative term, however, as many of the shades are warm. Overall, though, I can see where the ‘cool’ idea is coming from. The palette also comes with a double ended brush (lid+blending – nice to have but kind of scratchy) and a mini lipgloss that I found way too minty/plumping and instantly misplaced (I think the paladin ‘liberated’ it, actually – he’s been looking extra pouty for a while now…).

Finally! Cap’n Skelzor and crew have the chest open. Now they’re arguing about what you’re supposed to do with the contents, since they lack eyelids.

Okay, I think I’ve kept you in suspense for long enough – I know your day isn’t complete without seeing swatches on my phosphorescently white forearm, so here we go, from left to right in the palette:

Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette Review and Swatches

First round! As you can see, Foxy is nearly invisible on me, and Bootycall’s shimmer is the only thing saving it from the same fate on my phosporescent…phorearm. You know, I actually had to dangle my arm down and let the blood pool in it to even make enough contrast between my skin and Foxy for what little you see in the top picture! 😀

Foxy is a matte, cream yellow shade. It’s smooth and non-chalky, but obviously doesn’t stand out against my skintone. I usually use this for highlighting the inner corner or blending in the upper edge of a bolder shade near my browbone.

Half Baked is a fabulous medium gold. The payoff is incredible and the shine made the rest of the party start looking at me funny and asking where the treasure was (it’s always the rogue they suspect – not like we spend our lives disarming traps for them or anything, hmph!).

Bootycall is a lightly shimmery pale peachy pink sort of colour. Like Foxy, this one is nearly invisible on my skin when blended, so makes a great inner corner/browbone blender highlighter, or a cheek highlighter!

Chopper is a warm pink copper. Its pigmentation and standout qualities are similar to those of Half Baked – rich, opaque and shimmery. (used here!)

Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette Review and Swatches

Still taking advantage of the arm dangling trick to get better contrast on these 😉 My photo skills may be fledgling, but having only daylight for your setup and a glow-in-the-light-or-dark skintone doesn’t help…

Tease is a matte…heathery taupey brown? It’s sort of hard to describe, but it’s smooth and buttery and works well as a crease shade or soft smoky liner. (used here!)

Snakebite is a warm/cool shade. On the one hand, it’s a coolish dark brown, but then it has what I’d sort of call rosegold shimmer. The net effect is to make it a warm shimmery brown, but it’s technically more complicated than that.

Suspect is a softly shimmering tan. This one is nice as a crease shade or liner when I’m going for a really neutral, natural look.

Pistol is a gunmetal grey shimmer. Great for smoky eyes or lining!

Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette Review and Swatches

And the last four! No, I do not make a soft generator like humming in direct sunlight, no matter what that sniggering druid told you…

Verve is a pale silvery shimmer that almost has a kind of ‘faded antique rose’ note to it. Very pretty, and has the texture and pigmentation of Half Baked and Chopper. (Used here!)

YDK is a warm pinkish brown copper – next to it, Chopper looks positively orange! Once again, we see the Half Baked effect in terms of texture and pigmentation. This one is both a great crease shade to Chopper’s lid colour, and a standalone beauty. (used here!)

Busted is a cool dark brown with what almost seems like fine plum shimmer in it. It’s not supposed to be that specifically, I think, but in the pan it always has a more purple tone to it than I imagine it should…

Blackout is a solid matte black. The pigmentation could possibly be slightly more intense, but it’s a solid colour in terms of application, blending etc. You can see it most definitely in action here in my rogue look!

I take My Naked 2 palette on all my travels with me – its secure packaging and versatile nature make up for the little bit of extra weight, and the shadows don’t crease (even after two hours of nice sweaty ballet/catacomb clearing). They last until I choose to take them off, and if I use the UD primer potion with them, then, well, I haven’t found out how long they last yet because I don’t sleep in my makeup. Two daggers up from this rogue!

What do you think, fellow adventurers? Is the Naked 2 a favourite neutral palette of yours? Or is there another treasure out there you prefer? 😀

The Verdict:  Despite the warmth of some of its shades, you really can’t go wrong with the UD Naked 2 palette if you’re a cool-toned vampire (or anyone else, really). If you don’t own a lot of eyeshadow, it gives you a really great selection of useful colours, both matte and shimmery. The payoff is excellent, the longevity is great (with or without primer, in my experience) and you get a troll-load of eyeshadow for the price (especially if you’re in Middle Earth). The packaging is sturdy and the brush is…functional if rather scratchy. If you don’t already own a lot of neutrals, I would say definitely check this one out!

The practicalities: The Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette costs USD 52.00 each for 12 x 0.05 oz /12 x 1.3 g, is permanent, and may be acquired from http://www.urbandecaycosmetics.com. If you’re not in the US, they have a parcel forwarding service that they recommend, and if you’re in NZ, you can use YouShop from NZ Post to get a US shipping address. Importantly, there’s NO requirement to have a US billing address or credit card, which is usually where things go wrong for non-US consumers. Yay! 😀

Until next time, fellow adventurers, don’t forget to check for traps!

    • That was sort of the intention with that title 😉

The balance in this palette is indeed excellent! 😀 I wanted the Naked 3, but mostly for Dust, which sadly seems to have been problematic as a shade…

  1. I’ve had my naked 2 palette for about a year and a half and I gotta say that it’s a favorite of mine. In fact, I think I’m about to hit pan on tease. And I LOVE blackout as a liner. Also, hooray for UD not screwing you beautiful denizens of Middle Earth with the price!

    • It’s such a great palette! If you’d asked me a couple of years ago about ‘neutral’ eyeshadows, I’d probably have asked what the point was. But now I find myself reaching for the Naked 2 on all sorts of occasions, even if I’m doing an otherwise bright/colourful look. 🙂

  2. I’m yet to invest in UD, but out of the three Naked palettes, I think this would be my pick. I have a feeling that a lot of the Naked 1 would just be much of a sameness on my NC35-ish skintone, and I think Naked 3 would be waaaay too punched-in-the-eye on me.

Thinking about getting one of the Chichi palettes, actually — the 12 pan ones. The Nude one is apparently a bit of a dupe for Naked 1! And the others look pretty good.

    Like

    • I’ve heard those Chi Chi ones mare good – I think I saw Shannon (shaaanxo) swatch one or two on her channel, and I recall her saying that the pigmentation was pretty decent! The only thing standing in my way is the Naked 2 palette itself – once I have a giant 12 pan palette of neutrals, any other neutrals thing is going to have to be pretty unique to convince me I need it, LOL!

  3. I will be the first to admit, my Still Mind stuttered a little at that number. Good grief. How much would it cost to just have a US resident ship the thing? It looks like about $12… is there some reason that’s not legal? (Apart from nail polish and perfumes.)

    Like

    • Ah, Deliphinia, therein lies the rub. One first has to *have* a US resident to exploit 😉 I am fortunate that I have several very generous and helpful friends in the States, but many don’t.

It’s totally doable though. I got my Tarte MATTEnificent palette that way. The hardest part is actually paying your American friend back for whatever they got for you, so the easiest way is to do some sort of swapsies type thing.

      • Makes sense, sadly. Is paypal not an option?

For the record, since I will take any excuse at all to go to Sephora and live half a block from a Walgreens AND a Sephora (it’s… expensive), I would be delighted to be exploited.

        Like

      • Paypal certainly is, although it depends on your contact 😉 It’s very kind of you to offer to be exploited! I may take you up on th-NO DON’T TEMPT ME OMGWTFBBQ… 😉

  4. Eins, zwei, drei Oberkörper frei! Ha, tell that a skeleton and it will surely snicker at you…damn, even that is hard without vocal cords or a vocal apparatus. So, how exactly are those skeletons arguing in the end? Don’t tell me it’s magic, we all know friendship is, but what about skeletons ability to discuss philosophy?

    Like

    • They’re pretty one-track with philosophy really. Existential nihilists, most of them. Must be something about the undead status…

A skeletal snicker is more of a smug rattle. Maybe more of a snattle? Or a ricker?

  5. Syl you are my favorite person for reviews! not for the swatches but for the humour! I could read your review on anything! 😛 I have the Naked palette and guess what I have only used it once. Post getting it I realised I am not a fan of a big eye shadow palette as they are bulky and extremely confusing for my tiny brain! 😛 Haven’t bought any other palette after that..Lesson learnt!

    • Aww, Divya, you’re too kind! ^_^ I have to admit, part of the reason I bought the Naked 2 palette was so I would have some neutrals and never have to think about them again 😉 Much as I love eyeshadow, I’m not really a fan of having multiples of any shade. There are definitely things that the Naked 2 is lacking, but what it does have constitutes a solid neutral collection that you don’t really feel you have to add a lot to.

I feel you on the confusion – sometimes, there’s just too much choice!

  6. Hey Syl, have you looked into UK-based webshops? There are quite some around and they tend to ship worldwide for free! I think that might be cheaper than paying extra for the parcel-forwarding service?

Practicality aside, I’m glad to hear you like this one! I have the opposite problem. Some shades are a bit too cool for me. However, there are some that I keep going back to for my lower lash line, namely Snakebite and Busted! I also love Foxy for my brow bone.

    Like

    • In terms of the UK at the moment, I’m eyeballing ASOS and the Sleek website. The shipping on the Sleek one is RIDICULOUSLY good!

Hehe, I’m surprised that the Naked 2 could be too cool for anyone, but then I am super pale and chilly over here 😛 It’s a funny one, actually – I think a lot of the shades straddle the undertone line!

  7. I’ve read countless reviews on this palette, but I still enjoy hearing people’s thoughts on it. Seems like there’s a general consensus on the awesomeness of the Nakes palette though 🙂 I don’t think I know anyone who dislikes this palette.

    Like

    • Since the shadows themselves are of such great quality, and the palette kind of dances the line between cool and warm, I think it’s a pretty surefire crowd pleaser! I think it has the edge over the original Naked palette in that it has that matte black too…

  8. Syl, I tip my hat to you. You are a worthier makeup collector than I, because I would sooner flirt with a socially awkward dwarf than pay $75 for an UD palette.

Naked 2 is pretty awesome. I own 1,2 and 3, and I’m glad I decided to splurge on them.

  9. I’m a huge fan of UD shadows (as my, ahem, collection at home will show). I do prefer the Naked 1 to Naked 2 – simple because the bronze tones of the first Naked work better on me. Naked 2 takes a little bit of babying to look right on me… still, on the off chance I had to quit my current field and start over as a famous makeup artist (if you insist, Ms. Eldrige) I’d definitely have this in my bag!

Is it weird that I have a ginormous amount of appreciation for how you write? It’s so entertaining and factual at the same time!

    Like

    • Hehe, thanks. In general terms we should probably suck it up because makeup isn’t exactly a life necessity, but at the same time it’s the principle of the thing, and people jacking up prices just because it’s a captive market and they can :-S

  14. I have Naked and Naked 3. I DO NOT need Naked 2. DO NOT. Despite your review making it sound amazing. Also $40.00 for a MAC eyeshadow??? Sweet baby Jesus! I’m Canadian and I thought I had a right to moan about prices. You’ve effectively shut me up.

    Like

    • I dunno – isn’t MAC supposed to be designed/made in Canada? I still think that gives you a reason to question price hikes! More, in fact, as they shouldn’t be able to fall back on ‘import taxes’ or something 😛

I think if you have Naked 1 and 3, you’re probably mostly covered 😉 how do you find Dust, if you don’t mind my asking? 😉

      Like

      • MAC is mostly made in Canada but, for some reason, that never seems to matter. Even when our dollar was at par (was for ages but no more *sob*) we still paid more.

As for Dust, it’s one of my favourite shades! I’m very pale and pink-toned and it adds lovely shimmer.

        Like

      • Ah, MAC. Always classy 😛 thanks for your thoughts on Dust! It seemed to annoy lots of people, but I’ve never really gotten worked up about fallout (provided *something* stays on the lid, LOL!), so I’m still tempted…

But seriously, this is the Naked palette that convinced me of Urban Decay’s awesomeness.

    • Hehe, depending on your tolerance for mintiness, the loss isn’t tragic! It was a pretty gloss, as I recall, but I can’t stand really ‘plumping’ things :-S

The main attraction, however (the palette) is definitely worth the time!

  18. I’m finally catching up on all the posts I’ve missed in the past week! I really appreciate this review of Naked 2, because, counterintuitively, it’s persuaded me that I *don’t* need the palette. Not that the eyeshadows don’t look beautiful, but I think most of them would be too warm on me to read “neutral.” I do love Verve, though! It almost looks like a duochrome.

    Like

    • Verve is indeed lovely! I definitely think that if you have a ‘neutral’ palette that you love already, the Naked 2 is probably redundant. So I’m happy to help ^_^
