Want Glowing Coral Lips, Ranger-Style? Ooly Has You Covered with Dior Addict Lip Glow in Coral (#004)

What ho, folks. Ooly’s back from her latest recon, bringing you the world’s cutest little mini-haul from a recent trip through the mystical forests of Versailles: Dior Vernis in Perlé (#187) and Dior Addict Lip Glow in Coral (#004) from the Trianon Collection, Spring 2014.

The loot. And some rocks.

This is PART ONE, in which I talk LIP GLOOOOW. I’m not usually a big fan of lip products that aren’t balm. You know, when you’re out and about in the frosty mountain air all day, you don’t want hair getting stuck in your pretty lip gloss. You want balm. ALL of the balm. Because wind chill is a bitch.

So how did I end up with this lip glow bullet in my ammo bag? Well, see, there’s this rogue called Syl, and she will. not. shut. up. about the lip thingies… Plus, this glowy one said “color reviver balm” on it. BALM. 🙂

In the little booklet, it promised rather a lot: “customized color”, “complete lip care action” (!), and “an extremely long-lasting result”. Ahh, but in addition, to win my approval, it would have to tick several essential boxes: wear-time; hydration; nice smell; no weird taste; solid, non-melty formula; good mechanism. I’m not picky, really.

How did it do?

On my arm!

“Customized colour result”? No idea. Since the mage fixed me up after that little run-in with the cranky sorcerer, I only have the one set of lips. But it sure makes them look pretty and healthy, without being too colourful. I like it! Also, no problem if you happen to colour outside the lines. I love this because I usually need my balm to go outside the lipline for comfort.

Lip swatches, because the magical colour-changey thing doesn’t show on my arm.

“Complete lip care action” (!). Apparently, it contains extracts of wild mango and luffa cylindrica (the stuff they make loofahs out of). Whatever’s in it, it’s divine. Smooth to apply, comfortable to wear (not greasy or watery), and I am totally satisfied with the hydration levels.

Lip Glow with its pretty cap. Also, a freshly-captured wild mango.

“Extremely long-lasting result”. I’m insanely picky about this – unless I’m feasting on a tasty, roasted something, balms must stay put, but my lips drink the stuff like it’s the last barrel of cider in the cellar. The Lip Glow passed this one with flying colours – great wear-time, and it even fought off some frozen yoghurt.

Taste? None, which is just fine with me. Smell? LOVE. Honestly, I would wear it for this alone. I think it’s meant to be toffee, which sounds ghastly, but it’s really sort of caramel-y, minty, and not-too-sweet. Mmmm! Great for staving off thoughts of one’s stomach when food is scarce.

Formula & mechanism? Well, the tube is Dior-pretty, with the usual silver knobby thing. I love the formula. The balm feels good on. It doesn’t move on your face or feel like a layer of something goopy. Added bonus: it doesn’t wobble in the tube, or melt if kept in a bag too close to the campfire by accident. I’ve had it for over a month, now, and of the three (yes, three! because variety is the spice of life) balms in my bag, it’s the first one I reach for.

Verdict: Big Ooly Tick! IF YOU CAN STILL FIND ONE, BUY ONE. #004 Coral is LE, but if you prefer a pinker tone, there’s another shade (#001) that’s permanent and equally lovely. I might get one of those, too…

Dior Addict Colour Reviver Balm in Coral (#004): about US$30 or NZ$50-60, from the usual places.

As I always say, until I learn to spit gold, no one’s gonna pay me for my opinions! Sad but true. And so, until PART DEUX, mes chers amis… good hunting. And always look up.

Thanks Ooly for the fabulous review! 🙂

Until next time, fellow adventurers, don’t forget to hydrate your lips! (Also check for traps).

    • 😀 😀 NP. Seriously worth having, though I admit that finding one by now could be interesting. The farther-flung Dior counters, I suspect. Honestly, the difference between this “coral” and the permanent one is not that obvious until you actually have them side-by-side on your hand at the pedlar’s cart. And even then…

I’ll be interested to see if they do a purpleish one when they get over the current plastic/lacquer thing. Maybe autumn?

      Like

      • Probably. You seem to have to wait for Autumn for the purples and Winter for the real deep reds with a lot of brands. Not that I can really object to them being in the midst of Spring/Summer right now, which usually means CORALS! You should check out the new LE Chanel Utopia Illusion d’Ombre…

    • Hee, loot indeed! I was actually surprised by the coral, too. I’m no lip thingy expert (except in the sense that I know most shades don’t suit me that well), but I have this compulsion to swatch them all anyway, LOL. It was even more surprising when I ended up picking this one over the pink… O_o

Mango smoothie… HMMM. That’s making ME want a mango slushy cocktail. (What? It’s Friday…)

    • It IS pretty. Sucked me right in, LOL. I just had to include the propaganda in the review, because I’m one of those people who actually reads the little leaflet that comes with these products, and it frankly made me giggle. I still can’t read “complete lip care action” without inserting a mental bang (!!).

The mango was not impressed. But it was very tasty.

  1. I finished the pink one a while ago and I was so happy because you know, I never finished anything!!! 😀 I have decided to hold off on buying another one but now that I see the new coral shade, I might just change my mind!!!! You are no good to my wallet, Syl!!! >.<

    Like

    • Hee! I know what you mean! I don’t finish things very often, either. Maybe only eyebrow pencils and mascara. Certainly never fancy lip thingies! I always have so many balm sticks (<3 Burt's Bees) that I never really finish one… before I lose it.

This coral is really lovely. Even if it was LE, I hope they'll make more or add it to a permanent collection. I will def be getting the pink one when this coral is done. 🙂

      • Hi Ooly!! *waves*

Oh yes, I finished my first eyebrow pencil too a couple months ago! I was ecstatic!!! Hahaha! I never finish any mascara but I make sure to replace a tube every 3-4 months. 😀

I’ll totally have a look at this coral Lip Glow in person! I really want to try it!

  2. Hey Ooly, thanks for the post! I wanted that one and probably still want it, but I wonder how much it can do to my pigmented lips. I usually reach for an Addict Extreme for an everyday lip. The formula is moisturizing on me as well 😉

    • 😀 You know, that is a really good point about reviews of these “customized colour” products. You only have one set of lips, so really a whole bunch of us would have to get together and try it to do this scientifically! LOL. For me, I can tell I’m wearing something as opposed to nothing, so I guess it might darken your lips a bit, but maybe not enough for what you like? 😀 (I should note that I don’t really like a lot of lip colour on myself – I think it makes me look funny! That’s why I usually go for balm or tint+balm.) I’ll have to check out this Addict Extreme – don’t think I’ve tried that one. 🙂

      Like

      • Uh oh…

You’ve just given me an idea….

How would it be if a bunch of us got together and all tested the same colour-change/adaptation balm, then pooled the results? Perhaps not Dior (*wallet screams, softly*), but what about one of those Maybelline Baby Lips custom colour lip balms? They’re what, $3?

        Anyone keen?

      • Hey Ooly, you’re absolutely right! My natural lip color is pretty pigmented, so my “everyday” shades are probably bright enough for some other people. You should try an Addict Extreme! That’s my sweet spot when it comes to Dior formulas (though I like them all)! I like how it’s not too shiny, too matte, too pigmented, or too sheer. It leaves a stain that I can build on, so after a couple of applications, I have a stain that is pretty much indestructible!

And Syl, yes I’m in! I read this post a while ago that might help shed some light, too: http://musicalhouses.blogspot.be/2013/09/an-ingredients-analysis-of-colour.html
You’re a chemist so it should make more sense to you haha

      • Awesome! 😀 I shall try and round up a few more people. I might make a little post soon, actually, inviting people to take part! How do you think we should work it?

I’m going to hop over and take a look at that post – I generally assume with the ‘colour change’ type things that it’s an indicator and is going off your body’s own pH, but that was a total guess…

        Like

      • Aha, Red 27, I see. I don’t remember that one being on the back of the Baby Lips packaging though (I had a look, cos I wanted to know how it ‘worked’ when I got it). Mind you, that was a while ago, and of course I’m missing the bit of cardboard now…MUST FIND OUT!

        Like

      • Yes. I would totally be down with that. Let’s do SCIENCE! 😀

After reading that article it would seem that what really needs to happen is that someone comes up with a sexier name for Red 27…

Dammit, the reply-stacking in here is confusing. Did I just reply to myself or ALL y’all?!

        Like

      • Hey Syl! Got your email and thought I’d reply here to keep Ooly and Sunny updated, too! This sounds like a fun project so heck yes I’m in! Let me know the details and how we should execute our little experiment!

One thing I’d like to add is, besides the Science part itself, lighting is important, too! Since we are not together to take our photos under the same set of lighting, and we only have photos to show people how it looks on us, so I think we should plan a little bit whether we want to take our photos in studio lighting or natural lighting (indoor/outdoor/what time of the day – full sun, morning, evening) and so on. 😀

I wish you guys could understand Thai. I can explain it so much better in my language!! Hahahaha!

        Like

      • Don’t worry, Jaa! You explained it perfectly clearly, and I was thinking the same. I reckon we should all try and take out pictures in natural, indirect light. Mid-morning light maybe, if you want to get specific? 😀 I don’t really have the lighting setup, sadly, to do good artificial light photos…

There’s just one little holdup, and that seems to be that this particular Baby Lips product might be an Asia/Pacific exclusive! Sunny and Danielle haven’t been able to find it in Belgium or the US, respectively… the Dior glow lip balm is an alternative option for some, of course – do you think you can find the Maybelline one where you are?

        Like

    • I say, would you like to participate in a little experiment we’re trying to organise? We’re testing lip glow type products (such as the Dior balm and the Maybelline Baby Lips Glow) on different people, with the aim of collecting them all together! Email me if you’re keen on joining in!
