Beauty and the Geek – The Rogue Look in a Makeup Collaboration

Greetings from a band of true adventurers, fellow rogues!

Let me ask you this: what’s better than the wisdom and flair of a beauty adventurer? Why, the wisdom and flair of TWO beauty adventurers, of course! Today, I’m very excited to bring you yet another collaboration with the incomparable adventuress Melissa over at Kiss and Make-Up!

Right! The theme we chose for this collaboration was one very dear to my heart indeed – rogues! Yes, we’ll both be bringing you our sneakiest, stealthiest, stabbiest rogue-inspired looks, so sharpen your daggers and eyeliners, friends, here we go!

Mine is derived from the curious obsession with outrageous black eyeliner exhibited by pretty much every character (male or female) in the recently released videogame Thief (also known as Thief 4, Thief 2014, and The Thief Game That Everyone Was Hoping Would Be A Bit More Awesome, But Was ‘Okay’ Instead).

Here are some not insignificant characters from the game:

Madam Xiao Xiao, Orion, Erin (the inspiration for this look, and the gaily homicidal sometime protegee of…) Garrett! (the titular Thief). These images were taken from their respective pages on this Thief Wiki.

Something that you may notice about all of these individuals is their apparent shared love for the panda eye. So, while I could think of any number of ‘rogue’ themed looks, I chose to unleash my desire to go nuts with black eye makeup and replicate Erin’s look. The images below also illustrate an appreciable number of common rogue emotions, and the usual causes of these.

A Rogue’s Tale…

 

This look is incredibly easy to achieve, and will have you ready for plundering vaults within minutes! :

Face: The ghostly whiteness of my skin in the photos above is actually what you get if you take a normal, pale rogue, coat her in a couple of good layers of Chanel’s Le Blanc de Chanel (a white highlighting base product that I borrowed), dust over some powder and stand her in direct sunlight. The camera was wigging out! Skip concealer under the eyes – you don’t care if there are shadows there to start with!

Eye: I started with a layer of Urban Decay’s Primer Potion followed by a slick of lip balm over the lid and in the inner corners to help create that slightly lived in, oily look. You could also use clear lipgloss, but I don’t own any. That was followed by copious quantities of the matte black shadow Blackout from Urban Decay’s Naked 2 palette. Everywhere. Lid, crease, under the eye. Everywhere. Lastly, I used Urban Decay’s 24/7 liner in Zero to draw around and around my eye with a small wing, and Perversion to tightline. Lashes were curled and coated in Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara (review here), not that you can really see them!

Brows: Erin’s brows are kind of short and relatively thick, without a pronounced arch. I used Blackout to fill and thicken mine, getting rid of some of the arch and attempting to give the illusion that they’re shorter.

This look is fabulous! You literally cannot screw it up, no matter how much you’re getting jolted by the missiles from attacking guards as you make your escape across the rooftops. It’s disasterproof – if you spill or smudge or smear, it just makes it look all the more authentic, which is a delightfully rogueish deception. It’s your choice how much of the giant wing shadow is liner and how much is shadow. If I owned a black gel eyeliner, I probably would have gone a bit further, and darkened the whole thing more!

The above is concept art released for a character called the Queen of Beggars. To transform the look I did above into hers, simply blend a decent whack of your favourite shimmery purple shadow (UD Psychedelic Sister, perhaps?) onto the browbone, and cry heavily into your mascara (alternatively put on some non-waterproof liner and mascara and drop water over your eye). Her brows are quite thinly plucked and pale, and of course she’s rocking some wicked purple lipstick too.

Speaking of lips:

Erin’s vary in pictures from totally pale nude to a sort of brownish pink colour. Taking that, and the Queen of Beggars there as ispiration, might I suggest the following to complement whichever rogueishly smoky look you choose:

 

A choice of lipsticks for your Thief: my current favourite ‘nude for pale people’, Revlon’s Lacquer Balm in Demure; Bloom Charleston for a more tawny pink, and an old favourite MUFE #49 for the purple Queen of Beggars!

 

Before you ask, no, I did not alter that picture of MUFE 49. It really just does go on that creamy and opaque. It is glorious, and if you’re a fan of purple/dark lipsticks who doesn’t own it yet, you need to remedy that as soon as you can, and raid a nearby MUFE hoard! With your new eye look, your stealth should be unparallelled….eheheh…

(Please don’t steal from a MUFE counter….)

So that’s it, folks! A foolproof, heistproof, questproof makeup look for all the rogues and thieves out there, and anyone wanting to re-create some of the looks from Thief 4. Next time you want to try your hand at thieving, though, just make sure you leave my tea and biscuits alone…
