Answer Me These Questions Three! – A Suitably Geeky Makeup Poll

Greetings from behind a mythril clipboard, fellow rogues!

For quite some time, now, I’ve been drawn to the idea of making one of those posts like the ones I see over with Karen and Christine – you know, little (or not so little) questions that allow a rogue to ferret out all the intriguing secrets of the world! Or at least discover which kind of crease brush or chubby lip pencil is the crowd favourite 😉

In the spirit of such inquiry, I have devised the Rogue Approved Version for the Extraction of Secrets. Also known as ‘Answer Me These Questions Three’. The questions are simple, and you are free to answer as fully, as tersely, as logically or as fantastically as you like. Please only use blue or black ink, and consult the orc-xaminer if you require an additional answer booklet.

You can copy and paste the questions into the comment box, or just list your answers if you prefer 🙂

The Questions

  • Everyone has at least one lipstick/gloss in their kitbag that they don’t really like, but don’t want to throw out (note to self: more gold. Raid bigger dragon hoard). What’s your top tip for ‘making it work’?

  • The mage accidentally set fire to your kitbag, and only has the mana to conjure you one replacement item before you get back to the surface (it’s gonna be a long dungeon): what do you request?

  • Have you ever quickly checked your reflection in the paladin’s armour? (be honest!)

Makeup Poll

I asked these guys what their favourite coral lipstick was, and they argued for HOURS. Jeez…

I’m looking forward to reading your answers! 🙂

Until next time, fellow adventurers, don’t forget to check for traps!

Syl

  1. Behind a mythril clipboard? Are you really fearing what our answers will be or just super-prepared?

    – My finger. Best weapon/tool.
    – Moisturizer. One piece of makeup won’t transform me, but a good moisturizer will do wonders for the skin. Currently digging Dr. Jart’s Water Sure Gel.
    – All the frickin’ time. What else are gleaming mirrors for?

    • You should check and see if the Water Sure Gel surived the fire 😀 It might have if it’s that hydrating!

The mythril clipboard is for defensive purposes – you never know what sort of response you’ll get…

  2. 1. Everyone has at least one lipstick/gloss in their kitbag that they don’t really like, but don’t want to throw out (note to self: more gold. Raid bigger dragon hoard). What’s your top tip for ‘making it work’?
I have a bite lipstick duo in Too Bright and Both Too Purple AND Too Bright (for reference: http://www.sephora.com/luminous-creme-lipstick-duo-P384986?skuId=1584242 in Vivid). I find that if I apply it very lightly, using my fingers or a brush to sheer it out considerably, it can work. Alternatively, I sheer it a little, blot, and add a lip gloss that I usually think is a little staid over it. I’m a big fan of bright lipsticks (though I have not yet come to love violently purple lipsticks – it’s a flaw), but this one seems to look kind of .. off? on my face at full power. So, that’s how I fix it. Since I usually do my makeup on a train (er… in a hasty conveyance en route to the dungeon?), it can be hard to get right consistently, though. I usually just use things that are a little less sensitive to error.

    2. The mage accidentally set fire to your kitbag, and only has the mana to conjure you one replacement item before you get back to the surface (it’s gonna be a long dungeon): what do you request?
Cry. I would say a bright lipstick. Lately, it’s been YSL in 16 Orange Impertinent. Some dungeon lighting makes it look very orange, which I think can be intimidating to my enemies. (In sunlight, it’s really coraly pink on me and AWESOME). I feel less dressed without mascara, but lipstick is more fun. If you can only conjure one, after losing the whole kitbag, it seems like lipstick would be the biggest morale boost.

    4. Have you ever quickly checked your reflection in the paladin’s armour? (be honest!)
    … yes. Definitely yes.

    Like

    • Aww, don’t cry! But I definitely agree that bright lipsticks are the one thing I would make the mage use their mana on – they’re so pretty, versatile and can be used as an emergency trail marker…

  3. 1. I am drawn to too-bright lip products – too bright for me, that is. My solution is to put lip balm on first to sheer them out.

    2. After the rage has passed, I would ask for a lip balm (what can I say? I’m a one-trick pony). Works for moisturising lips and that all-important under eye area. You don’t want the rest of the group mistaking you for an orc once you finally get above ground!

    3. Who hasn’t? It’s important to check your make-up in all lighting situations!

    • Aha! The old balm-under-the-lipstick trick! I, too, have fallen back on that faithful method myself many a time! Even if I like the bright lipstick, sometimes you just get out there and think – ‘actually, this was too much.’

All Hail the Mighty Hypno- uh, I mean, Lip Balm!

  4. Hahaha what a fun questionnaire! Let me see…

*For shades that don’t work well on their own for me, I mix them with something else. I have layered lipstick over another lipstick, or a gloss over a lipstick. Most of the time when paired right, you can make things work!

*Oh no, nobody sets fire on my bag! If I could only have ONE item, I guess I’d ask for my brow pencil (for without any I look really, REALLY weird).

*Sooo I do have a mirror in my bag, but I seldom take it out. Most of the time I pretend I’m checking my phone and use that as a mirror instead. That and car windows are pretty handy too :p

    Like

    • Hehe, I’ve definitely used my phone screen before as a mirror! That and reflective surfaces in the lab…

You’ve got to watch out for mages – I should know, I married one 😛 he doesn’t usually set fire to things, to be fair.

Mine would be Revlon Superlustrous mattes Mauve It Over (discontinued). It’s my lips, but slightly more orange brown, though the texture and everything else is fine. I either mix it with another lipstick to tone down a brighter color or… well, this sounds really weird, but if I have to put the white zinc oxide on my face as sunscreen, I use this on my lips to make them a little less… insane white. I’ve been using it up doing this! haha

2.) The mage accidentally set fire to your kitbag, and only has the mana to conjure you one replacement item before you get back to the surface (it’s gonna be a long dungeon): what do you request?
Eyeliner. Though my eyebrows will be sad and jealous that they don’t have any color.

3.) Have you ever quickly checked your reflection in the paladin’s armour? (be honest!)
Definitely. I love saying hi to myself and making a good derp face.

    Like

    • What a tip! I’ve often wondered about using zinc, but never read about anyone doing it 😀 Awesome MacGyver tip.

Making derp faces in the Paladin’s armour is a tried and tested way of amusing yourself and other party members on a long quest. Fact. 😀

  6. Making it work: Combine with other stuff! I have several lipsticks that I never wear on their own, but frequently use to change the tone of others. For example, a terrible black costume lipstick.

One replacement item: Bright lipstick, for sure! My lips are my favorite facial feature, and a pretty “pop of color” can liven up the whole face.

I shameless look at every mirror and reflective window 😉

    • The best part about admiring yourself in the Paladin’s armor is that they usually think the admiring gaze is for them, motivated by your appreciation of their radiant glory. You never have to worry about annoying them! 😉

  7. 1. For lipsticks that does not work on me, mostly matte formulas, I do this: proper exfoliation, moisturize with my trusted mineral lip balm then apply matte lipstick. I also have a balm in my pocket when I feel I’m about to get chappy.
    2. One replacement item when my kit is set fire? Why only one? This is a tough decision to make. Hmm, maybe one of those lip & cheek tints.
    3. Of course, I check myself in mirrors. Who doesn’t? LOL

  8. 1. Not having a kitbag might disqualify me here, but one should always have something to freshen up in one’s bag. After all, if one complain about other people’s BO, one should sit in the glass house.
    2. The sandwich he incinerated. I then turn him into a frog, because he is my apprentice…that will teach him.
    3. Obviously, pointy hats look ridiculous enough if you wear them properly, so you surely have to check the proper fit once in a while.

    • Glass houses are indeed best avoided. And you’re right that pointy hats are a tricky thing to pull off – it’s like a rogue’s hood, each has their own style. Paladins are so useful!

  9. 1) use only a little or mix it with something else (I always thought I was lame for doing that, so I’m really glad everyone else does it too!)

    2) lip balm (you knew I was going to say that!)

    3) no… because the bendy surface makes me look fat, LOL 🙂

    • ROFL – I hadn’t thought about that. You’ve gotta avoid the pauldrons, I think, particuarly.

Just decided to go out to the supermarket randomly. Also decided that this necessitated bright fuchsia lipstick, because why not?

  10. 1) I have one incredibly old lipstick that has gone rancid, but the color is just magic AND it’s been discontinued! It’s NARS Porte Vecchio, and I’m hoping that one day I’ll find a good dupe. On me it’s the perfect wine stain, classy and sexy, but also a tiny bit goth. I”m hoping one of the heavenly YSL Glossy Stains will be the answer to my prayers. but until I get a perfect match, I hold onto this little stub of a lipstick that I can’t bear to part ways with. Tragic.

    2) Mage destroyed my make up kit?! What?! Okay, I’d have to choose eyeliner – Urban Decay Stray Dog, to be specific. Another gift from the makeup gods – that has since been discontinued – this dark greige taupe with silver metallic foil defines my brown eyes in such a soft, sweet way. Our love goes way back.

    3) Me checking my reflection? Yes all the time! Unfortunately no studly Paladin at my side for furtive reflection checks, but this summer that will change! Yes, I have vowed to leave the library and find a suitable mate. Paladin or mage preferred. No offense, but I’m a little tired of charming rogues.

By the way – are you playing Elder Scrolls? I’m obsessed!

    • 1) this is totally legit. I have done the same, with an old Dior Lipstick! I am desperate to try a YSL glossy stain, but I’ll have to save up first, heh!

      2) I think I have stray dog as an eyeshadow…is it the same shade as the eyeliner? It sounds lovely!

      3) it’s ok – I married a wizard after all 😀

I have played all the games (most recently Skyrim, of course), but the only MMO I have current is Guild Wars 2. How’s the ES one?!

Welcome to the Painted Rogue, Gina!

      • Thanks Syl! I’m still not sure what I think of the newest Elder Scrolls. I”m not a fan of online games, and my favorite game of all time is Morrowind, for the creativity and the open scope. So this version – well, it’s very busy with players running all over the place. Lots of structured assignments, less opportunity for random exploration. But on the positive side – the amount of work and creativity behind the the world building is incredible.

Also – YSL Glossy Stains are the best! Definitely a luxury, but maybe you should treat yourself for a birthday? or special occasion? 😉

      • Well, they do tend to put in a lot of effort over at Bethesda (well, except into maintaining the PS3 version of Skyrim, but that’s a different gripe) into making a detailed world, which is nice! I was a bit put off by the subscription though – I prefer the GW2 model, where you pay once for the game, then spend your time merrily ignoring the micro transactions 😀

I might invest in a glossy stain when I finish the draft of my thesis 😉 any shade recommendations?

  11. Oooh – I think you’d really like #7 Corail Aquatique – very pretty, MLBB coral shade. Or #12 (Corail Philtre?) for a more intense, brighter coral. This one can also be sheered out for the same effect as #7, so maybe go for #12 as the better bargain? Good luck on your thesis!!
