Greetings from the scene of an accidental beehive disturbance, fellow rogues!
You know, when you spend a lot of your time in forsaken crypts and forgotten ruins, fending off eldritch horros from beyond time and space (and gelatinous cubes), you can forget the simple, everyday dangers. Like bees. And dry lips.
Susie the Bard managed to trip over a beehive the other day, and all of my worries about chapped lips from rooftop chases were temporarily superseded by the desire to run very fast in the opposite direction. As we were escaping from the buzzing mob, I did manage to snag some loot from an unexpected hoard: Burt’s Bees Lip Gloss in Rosy Dawn, and a Tinted Lip Balm in Hibiscus.
I’d never tried Burt’s Bees before, because (as lip balm type stuff goes) it’s very expensive here. Ooly swears by it, though, so when I spotted a GWP happening at Smith and Caugheys, I decided to take the plunge. The total haul also included a cute bag and a hand cream (which I will be reviewing separately when I’ve had more time to see if it works!).
Let’s start with the lip balm, actually. It’s a nice smoothing, creamy lip balm, with a sort of melony orange tint to it. On the lips, this translates to a nice coral effect, but the tint is manageable, so you can apply it without a mirror or worrying about looking uneven. It kept my lips nicely hydrated for a few hours, and didn’t have a strong smell or taste (just slightly ‘natural’. It doesn’t smell strongly of honey or anything). Below are the ingredients, for your perusal:
As you can see from the photos, the packaging of the actual lip balm is just your standard Chapstick type packaging. It works perfectly well and has a nice smooth twisting mechanism, so nothing to complain about there. The cardboard tube it comes packed in, however, puzzles me a bit. It’s a very nice, sturdy tube, attractively designed, and provides space for the ingredient list. However, it is rather wastefully large, in a way, and there’s certainly a bit of an anticlimax when you open it up and a tiny little lip balm tube rolls out :-P.
Right! Onto the Lip Gloss!
I chose the shade Rosy Dawn, because it was such a pretty, sparkling medium pink in the tube. There are several other colours, and they all look lovely and have dreamy, day/night/seasonal related names. Applied, the lip gloss is relatively sheer, but provides a pretty hint of colour and a nice layer of soft gloss with tiny shimmers. The overall effect is not ‘shimmery’ unless you view it close in direct sunlight, but it’s a perfectly respectable sheer-pink ‘MLBB’ lipgloss, and I’m happy with the shade I chose. Partly, I chose it because I wanted to make sure (for $20 and no returns in this country) that it would be fairly easy to make it work. I’m quite keen to get my hands on one of the ruby red toned ones, as they look glorious – I would have gone for one of those initially, but sometimes darker/brighter colours can be streaky or difficult, so I wanted to play it safe!
The ingredients:
My favourite part about this gloss is that it is beautifully hydrating. While I have it on my lips, aside from the slight tack that develops right toward the end of wear, I don’t really notice that I’m wearing anything (feel-wise). No dryness around the edgess, no sliminess or stickiness. Just soft, glossy, hydrated lips. The gloss doesn’t really have a strong scent or flavour – if anything it smells a bit like what I would call ‘natural wax’. Once you have it on your lips, though, you don’t really notice anything. I would say, however, that if you’re looking for GLOSS! or SPARKLE!, this isn’t really it. It’s more like a slightly glossy balm-in-liquid-form with very fine sparkles for me. Since I like that, I’m happy, but your mileage may vary.
The only quibbles I have with it come on the packaging front. The tube is sturdy and secure, that’s totally fine. It won’t leak in your bag or anything. The doe foot applicator is also totally functional in and of itself. The main issue I have is that the doe foot applicator comes out with almost no product on it – maybe enough for one lip on a good pull. It’s hardly difficult to dip back in for more, but I feel that although there isn’t a strong ‘pull’ to get the applicator out, somehow there’s very little product on it. The other issue that I have is that very quickly, the printing on the tube started to wear/scratch off. This is also not really a huge deal, but I get twitchy about stuff that looks battered even when I’ve taken care of it 😛
Finally, some swatches:
And a lip swatch comparison! *Gasp* Since I believe that lip balms and sheer lipglosses should work when you’re wearing no other makeup, you get my rather mottled facial skin into the bargain! Lucky you 😉
Just as a quick note: this was the adorable little bag I got the gift in (I bought the lip gloss for $20, and received the bag, full-size hand cream and lip balm for free!). It’s canvas, lined and has a sturdy zip. Love!
Have you tried any of the Burts Bees line? Stay tuned for my review of the handcream, coming to an adventure board near you soon!
The Verdict: The lip balm is lovely and hydrating, with a nice, even tint. I’m not sure I’d pay full price for it on a regular basis, considering how much lip balm I go through, but that’s partly NZ prices. It’s definitely well worth your time if you’re looking for a nice coral-tinted lip balm, however, and there are several other shades in the range! The lip gloss is a winner for me: soft, hydrating and smooth with a hint of glossy shimmer. The Rosy Dawn colour really is a lovely medium pink, MLBB colour, and I’m very happy with my purchase. I’m keen to try some other shades in the range!
The Practicalities: Burts Bees Lip Glosses cost NZD 20.00 / USD 8.99 each for 0.2 fl. oz / 6 mL, and may be acquired from chemists/drugstores, Farmers, department stores and similar, as well as www.burtsbees.co.nz (Yes! They actually have a dedicated NZ website that you can buy from!) or sixteen other countries’ Burts Bees websites, including the US and UK. The Tinted Lip Balms are NZD 18.00 / USD 6.99 each for 0.15 oz / 4.25 g.
Until next time, fellow adventurers, don’t forget to check for traps!

Oooh, so pretty. I like hibiscus. Burts is a favorite of mine. Their website has a fun test that helps you pick your best lip color. I discovered it when I was surfing their outlet store. There are great deals in the outlet, but it doesn’t ship outside the US. boo!

They also have the annoying thing where I can’t actually visit any other country’s BB website – it just defaults to the NZ one. However, the fact that you can actually order it from an NZ site is pretty neat. 🙂 I really want to try some of the red glosses…

not to jump in, but I got the NZ site from the link above – I wonder if a direct link takes you to different country sites?

I tried direct links, but it modified it to the .co.nz URL every time. Perhaps there’s a browser setting that I need to turn off that’s autochanging everything to the NZ option if there is one…

Hibiscus is very cute on you.
I use their tinted lip balms too! That actually doesn’t happen to me too often: when I see something on a blog that I actually use.
My assessment is about the same as yours — cute tint, only mildly hydrating (more oily or waxy than anything… but it will hydrate if you leave it on over night), but not quite worth the price. So I’ll probably move on after I use mine up 🙂
I got mine on sale for less than $3 each!

*sob* $3… 😛
That’s exactly it! It’s nice to have had the opportunity to try the balm, but $18 a pop is pretty steep for everyday use… If I could get them for $3, I’d probably own every shade, heh.

Thank you for the Cage reference. Always a delight if people spread the message. All hail the Cage. On another note: only because skeletons have no lips I could see them still enjoying this product. They could just paint their faces with it, to appear even more fearsome….mmmh, or not.

Actually, I’m not sure if a moldy skeleton necromancer wearing lipgloss smeared over its maxilla and mandible would be even scarier, or so ridiculous that you’d die laughing…

Plus, all your usual issues are still the same – if your bones are more yellowed, then you can rock oranges and warm corals, but if they’re more of a cool grey, you have to look more for the pinks! mauve sand blue-reds.
Oh gods. I feel a comic post coming on…!!

oh awesome, I’ve been wondering about their lip gloss! (I can’t stand the sticky feeling some brands have)
otherwise I’m a big fan of the lip shimmers 🙂 they’re fairly sheer (but somewhat buildable) and hydrating, but still last quite well and don’t look overdone when you touch up 🙂

Yay! Glad to help! Stickiness is a bit of a subjective parameter, I find, but these seemed good to me! (At least until 3-4 hours in or so)

Agree with the packaging of the lip balm. I was the same. I was like.. whaaa? A packaging this big but so small the lip balm! I’m really digging Rosy Dawn, though. What a gorgeous everyday pink shade. Looks so nice on your lips, too. I’m going to check it out next time I’m at Ulta. 😀

Yay! 😀 You should definitely take a look – I think you’ll be impressed by some of the other shades too; actually, they all look lovely in the tube – kind of glowy and lit from within.

Everything they make in the lippie department is a winner! Yeah for the money in your country it’s a bit steep, but I’d hate to see the price of Fresh’s offerings. That would probably be a Dragon Horde’s worth of gold!

Perhaps fortunately (?), Fresh is not available here. 😛
The brands I’d really like to see/laugh weakly at the pricing of in this country are Tom Ford and Sisley! Fortunately for the nation’s cardiac health, they don’t exist here. By Terry is bad enough – her lipgloss/balm things are $94 each! (yes, you read that right).

Hey Syl, the last time I tried Burt’s Bees is a couple of years ago now! The lip balm just slides off my lips too fast, and I haven’t paid much attention to the brand. I do like how Hibiscus looks on you though!

I’d definitely recommend passing a glance over the glosses, if you’re in the market for one, but I do wish the lip balm was a bit more awesome for the price it is here! 😛 The colour is pretty though…

YAY, told you you would like it. 😀 You know I have like 100 of the untinted balms (get the pomegranate one, people! It’s the best!) so I didn’t try this GWP thing. Now I’m thinking I should have. O.O
I got burtsbees.com when I tried – lip shade finder included! Try your iPad. The shade finder was pretty fun – tells you what shade you should get in all the things! Apparently I’m orchid blush or something in the big cardboard tube, and rosy dawn same as you in the other one. Hmm…
You also know I hate gloss, generally, so I’d be interested to try this BB one based on your comments and my undying love for BB products overall.
Size Does Matter: so is the tinted balm actually the teeny weeny sized BB tube (you know, the one that’s practically a sample), or the standard BB tube, which seems puny compared to the giant packaging but is actually about the size of most other twisty lip balms?
ALSO: something you could try with the gloss: I read on a glitter eyeliner review that if you remove that plastic plug thing (‘wiper’?) in the neck of the tube, you get more product on the wand, but not in a leaky, spill-out way. IDK if this works for gloss, too, but I would think so… probably better than liner, since the wand is thicker. Dare you to try it, rogue. 😉
Epic comment is epic.

The GWP might still be going – I can pick you up something if I see that it is?
The tinted lip balm isn’t as skinny and teeny as the lip shimmers – I feel like it really is about the same as a standard Blistex or Chapstick tube, although I don’t have one on hand for comparison.
I might have a look and see if I can remove the wiper thing from the tube, but I think it’d be pretty difficult in this one without sawing off the top of the tube anyway, LOL. 😀
Epic comment is welcome!

Aw, that bag is adorable! As for the balm & glosses… I love Burt’s Bees straight balm and use it every day, but I’ve always been disappointed by their more makeup-y products because they’re SO subtle. Subtlety is just not my thing.
